I sit on the stool quietly as I bring the beer bottle to my mouth. The cold liquid runs through my veins and not stopping. I can hear my blood moving around in my body, I can feel my heart pounding against my rib cage, and I can taste the hot air as it rolls straight through my taste buds. Is this what being drunk feels like?
All of a sudden I hear a snap. "Day dreaming again?" Connor says while lacing his fingers in my hair.
"No," I simply say looking at all the colored beers in front of me. I bet their phrase is a grown-up version of 'Taste the rainbow'.
"What were you dreaming about," he says with a small smile. "Me, right"
"Yeah you wish," I laugh a little.
"Ok ok...tell me for real. What were you dreaming about?" Is it really that important, Connor.
"You're going to laugh at me, so no," I shake my head like a child.
He stares at me blankly. I try my hardest not to laugh but there is really no reason to laugh.
"I was thinking about the...beer," I say with a little laugh.
"Really, you expect me to believe-"
"I swear..I-i mean I promise," I correct myself.
"Why can't you swear again?" What's with all these damn questions.
"Because...I'm a good person, and good people don't swear," except for my mom, my dad, my siblings, all of my friends, and even my grandmother.
"If you are such a good person why are you here drinking beer?" Connor says with a smile, his white teeth blinding me.
"I'll ask you the same question," I smile back attempting to blind him with my teeth too.
"No one said I was a good person," you got that right.
Connors hands untangle from my hair and wrap around the brown bottle. He tilts his head back and brings the bottle to his lips.
"What?" He says when he notices me practically drooling on his pants.
"Nothing," I smile then kiss him on his cheek.
As I sit back down on the stool I feel my butt vibrate and a flashing light shining as white as Connors teeth. When I look at the name on my phone screen, it reads 'Mom <3'.
I pick up instantly hoping nothing is wrong.
"Hey mom is everything ok?" I question as soon as I pick up.
"Yes sweetie everything is fine, We just want you home before or at 11, please. Me and your father need to talk to you and your siblings," My moms gentle voice travels through the phone and out of the speaker. There is no fear, worry, or sadness that is evident through her voice.
"Yeah sure, I'll leave now," I say before I press the the red button to hang up.
"Who was that?" my boyfriend asks.
"My mom," I say quickly before picking up my bag and putting $10 on the counter. "I'm leaving now I'll call you tomorrow," I say and kiss him on the lips this time.
"Why. Where are you going," Connor pouts. He's so cute.
"Home!" I yell back as I run out the door and into my car.
I drive at a reasonable pace, slightly going over but not noticeable. Curiosity is getting the best of me right now, so I'm trying to hurry.
As soon as I pull into the drive way my mom opens the front door welcoming me in, like it's been years since I came back home.
"Hey Leila," my brother calls out from the kitchen table when I walk in.
"Hey" I simply say back then sit on the couch.
My parents sit on the large chair in front of me and my mom calls my siblings names, "Winston, Stephanie!!"
My sister comes running down the stairs like there's a fire coming from her room. I hope not.
And my brother gets up from the kitchen table and walks over and sits right next to me. Has he never heard of personal space, has he?"We actually have great news to tell you guys" my father says with the most weirdest smile ever. He looks more constipated than excited.
"Wait!" My sister says and takes out her phone and bright light shines out, "ok continue,"
I snatch her phone away from her hands and throw it across the living room floor making it slide against the milk chocolate wood.
Not to my surprise my sister takes out another phone and shines the light again. I don't bother to snatch it away this time..I JUST WANT TO HEAR THE 'GREAT NEWS'.
"Proceed," my sister says then sticks her tongue out at me. She's lucky we are around our mom and dad, I would've tackled her then carry her outside and lock her out for 3 hours.
"Ok...we.." My mom starts.
"WE ARE MOVING!!" My dad says letting his excitement flood out.
What.
"REALLY!!" My sister jumps up.
"What..?" I don't know what else to say.
"REALLY...WHERE TO?!" My brother excitedly screams.
"Maryland," my mother claps.
"What..?" I say slower this time.
"We are leaving two days from now" my father says.
They keep talking and I don't want to hear it anymore.
"WHAT!" I scream breaking the loud excited screams and clapping.
"What's wrong," my moms countenance turns into a frown.
"Why are we moving!?!"
"Because-" My father starts this time.
"Because we are grown-ups and we can do what we thinks best for all of us." My mother stands her ground.
I can't believe this. I'm going to leave all the memories behind. How wonderful.
Without a word I grab my bag and walk up the 20 steps. I walk to my room and close the door. I plop down on my bed and call one of my favorite person in the world. Connor.
"Hello babe-stickle," he laughs into the phone and doesn't stop until I tell him to shut up.
"I have news for you, Connor."
"Spill it," he shifts in the background.
"I'm moving in two days.." I let out.
"What?! Why?" Connor slightly raises his voice.
"I don't know but surpriiiise," I say gently while rolling my eyes.
"I can't believe it," he breathes. I can tell he is trying to collect himself, like I'm attempting to do. "Come see me tomorrow ok"
"Okay," I say simply and hang up the phone.
"Such a great way to end the day, Leila," I say aloud trying to ease my confusion/anger, but it doesn't work. So I close my eyes wishing this was either a prank or a dream.
