My mother's small black car swerved in front of me, making me stop in my tracks. My mother rolled down the window and peeked her head out.
"Where do you think you are going?!" Oh crap! She must be drunk.
"School." I stood there rolling my eyes.
"No, I need you to babysit my friend's kid. I was going to do it but Jim needs my help." Oh, of course, she wasn't done screwing her boyfriend yet.
"I really have to go to school, it's only the third day!" I argued, but I knew it was pointless. She knew kids were my weakness.
"Fine, then that little 3 year old, Jayden, will have to fend for himself for a few hours. I'm sure he will be fine." I would have just walked away and trusted that someone would watch the kid if I hadn't known her so well. She wasn't lying.
"Fine, whatever." I turned around and started walking back to my house. Not so on top of the world anymore. She passed me in her car, swerving every way.
I thought I heard her say thanks, but probably not. I had never babysitted Jayden before but I often had to babysit the kids my mom had promised to watch. She knew I took extra care of any kid and I actually genuinely tried with them, but not with anyone else.
I had a theory about that, I think that because my mom so severely screwed up my sister and me, I tried to compensate. I wasn't sure, though. All I knew was no matter what if I had kids I would always be there for them. Which is why I wasn't going to let myself have kids.
My mother has schizophrenia, which is hereditary so I figure, either I'll get it and ruin my kid or my kid will get it. Why would I want to put a kid through that?
I arrived at the house and went inside. What was I going to tell my friends? I could tell Charlotte the truth because I had already opened up about my mother with her but the others?
"Hey, my mother's making me babysit one of her friends kids. Couldn't say no, you know, so I won't be at school, sorry." There's Charlotte out of the way, now Logan and should I tell Cole? Would he care?
"Can't go to school. Family drama, text you tonight though." I texted Logan, just as Charlotte texted me back,
"It's all good, want to hang out later today?" I couldn't, I wasn't sure when Cole was coming over. I just didn't text back. I would think of an excuse later.
I decided against texting Cole, in case he was with Kayla. Oh, yeah, Kayla! Maybe I should text her? I didn't have her number. Should I text Cole to tell her? Nah, that could upset Cole.
I sat down on the couch and flipped on the T.V. It felt like I was waiting for hours, but finally I heard a knock on the door. I opened the door and a small boy rushed in followed by an exhausted looking woman. She handed me a bag of what looked like toys and a McDonald's bag, then waved to the kid and left.
I closed the door and turned to the little boy. He had already sat himself down in front of the T.V. and become completely entranced. I sat the stuff on the table and sat down on the couch, behind him.
"So, you're Jayden?" I finally spoke once there was a commercial.
"Yep" he turned around and faced me. He started talking in that little kid way, where you barely understand the kid but it's so cute that you don't care.
He continued to go on about something having to do with a birthday party, I think. I picked up his food and waited for him to take a break.
"You better eat." I said, holding the bag out towards him. He gladly took it and started stuffing his face. We had fun the rest of the morning and into the afternoon.
Around 4, my mother walked in and set down her purse. She started talking to him in that annoying voice people always use.
"Why are you here?" I asked, though I was pretty sure it was because her "friend" would be here soon.
"Kylie is coming to get Jackson at 4:30, then I'll be going to bed." Probably didn't get any sleep last night.
"His name is Jayden.' I said walking into the kitchen.
"That's what I said, Quit trying to be superior!" She yelled, causing Jayden to get scared and run into the kitchen for me. He scowled in my mom's direction and I picked him up and nodded to him. I liked this kid.
"It's cool, little dude. She does that sometimes." I said bouncing him up and down so that he giggled.
My mother growled under her breath as she walked by us. She started pouring herself some cereal and I made her some coffee. She did this at random times, a lot so I was used to it.
My mother continued to do her own thing and we did ours. Eventually Jayden was picked up and my mom disappeared to her bedroom upstairs. I spent the rest of the day sitting around and watching netflix. I didn't feel like dealing with anyone, even people I liked so I didn't text anyone and besides a few texts from Logan and a text from Charlotte, nobody texted me.
