There was a bump as the road beneath the car turned to gravel. I turned to look at the boy beside me, both sad and excited that we were nearly there. "ill miss you," I said, knotting my fingers even more tightly with his. "You will come and visit me, right?"
"Chill Indi, its only a month, it'll be over before you know it." He glanced sideways at me, his mouth tweaking up into a small smile, "besides, I've got things to do." Of course. The things. I hate the things. Mainly because the things are much sneakier sounding than dishes, or nature tours, or even hedge trimming. I would be very supportive of my boyfriend if he had a secret hedge trimming hobby, because then the things would stop being just things and become somethings. "What things, babe?" I asked, trying to be as nonchalant and uncaring as possible. "You know, just stuff here and there. Important bits and pieces. We can't all have holidays like you." Damn. Stupid things. I sighed, and looked out the window. Brody was right. When my aunty had invited me to the sea with her family for the summer, I had jumped at the chance. I mean are you kidding? Sun, sea, sand and friends I hadn't seen in forever? Yeah, no thanks, I would actually prefer to stay in my room all summer waiting for my boyfriend to finally be straight up with me. Not.
The car jolted to a halt in front of a clean, white summer house. I threw my body weight against the door excitedly, only to slam straight into the window. I huffed and looked over at Brody, who unlocked the door while smirking at me. "Stupid car" I muttered as I clambered out, tripping a little on the uneven mish mash of grass, sand and gravel that lead up to the front door. "Get my bag Hun" I called over my shoulder, knowing that he wouldn't and at the same time not caring. The front door slammed open and a blonde girl raced at me. She slammed into me, smelling of sea salt and shampoo. "OH MY GOD IVE MISSED YOU" she shrieked, her voice going up 3 octaves before I'd even had time to blink. I winced, but squeezed her to me equally as hard. "Missed you too, Stell," I replied, managing to keep my voice at normal pitch. I untangled my limbs from my cousin Stella's perfectly tanned ones, pretending not to notice how vampireish I looked in comparison to her. Bloody England winter. "Oh my god, have you been living in like, a basement or something?" Apparently Stell had noticed. Oh. She tugged on my arm still linked through hers, dragging me up the path to the front door. I glanced back over my shoulder to see Brody leaning on his car, squinting his eyes at the sunlight while simultaneously texting. I sighed again, and, ripping myself free from Stella, danced back down the path to him, grabbing his phone, and my bag, and then swinging around to plant a kiss full of smiles on the his cheek. "Cmon, I know youre keen to get rid of me, but at least wait until you leave to start hitting up replacement girlfriends," I teased, easily fending away his feeble attempts to reclaim his iPhone. I slipped it into my pocket and hurried back up to Stella. "Stella, Brody. Brody, Stella." There. Introductions sorted. Brody nodded hi to Stella, a hand in his blonde fringe, shading his eyes from the light. "It always this sunny up here?"
"Pretty much, are you staying?" she replied like she couldnt care less, but as I watched her eyes traversed my boyfriend, eyeing his biceps, and his waistband where his shirt was riding up. Hmm.
"Na, i'm just gonna catch up with some mates and then go."
"What?" Too busy watching Stell, I'd misheard what he said.
"Mates, India. You know, friends?"
"I know what they are, I just didn't know you knew anyone up here?" I was sounding more and more like the clingy girlfriend, but I just couldnt quite believe that he had forgottenabout his so called friends right up until this moment.
"Yeah-" "-well-" "-you-" "don't-" "-know-" "-everything." He smothered me with kisses in between each word, and then, just like that, he was gone. Without barely a goodbye over his shoulder my boyfriend strode out of my summer.
Apparently Stella didn't find this nearly as strange as I did, because next thing I knew I was being hustled in through the all-very-familiar door, down the all-very-familiar corridor and dumped in front of a door. My door. Covered with shells and surfing stickers, coated in chipped white paint. In that moment, it looked a lot like home.
"I'll go get food from Mum" a rapidly departing Stellz yelled over her shoulder.
I yelled back an ascenting noise, before battering my way through the door, and dumping my bag on the bed. The window was open, and it smelled just how I remembered it. Like heat, and the sea, and flowers from outside. I turned to look in the mirror, taking in my long, dark hair, mussed from Stella's loving assult. My cheeks were flushed and my blue eyes were wide, and my clothes were rumpled from the long car trip. I groaned. No wonder Brody had been in such a hurry to leave. I looked like a swamp monster. I made a beeline for the ensuite, determined to tidy myself up before I frightened anyone else off. I reached for the door to the bathroom, and was about to turn the handle when it opened from the inside. Great, I thought, as I plowed face first into a very tan, very sculpted, very shirtless chest. Just spectacularly classy.
The breath rushed out of my lungs and I felt my face warm with embarrassment. I stepped back, and looked up to apologise to the half-naked boy in my bathroom, but I stopped short. My jaw dropped.
"Harry??"
