Chapter 8:
“Mama, what should we make for dinner?” I ask mom on the ride home.
“Well, I was thinking that we stop at the grocery store and pick up some things for spaghetti.”
I grin and nod. I absolutely love spaghetti. I wish Izzy was here to see mama like this. I look at mama and see that she's smiling at me. I smile back and hold her hand.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a truck slams in to the back of our car. I scream and mom slams on the brakes.
“Are you okay, Emilie?” She asks checking my body for anything wrong. I nod and try to steady my breathing, There's a knock on the window and mom gasps and tries to start the car. I look out the window and see father with a baseball bat.
Just as mom gets the car started, father brings the bat against the window. It shatters and mom and I scream. Mom presses the gas and we lurch forward. Father grabs mom by her hair and pulls, trying to drag her out of the car.
“Mommy!” I scream, and look around for something to use against father. There's nothing on the floor, so I grab his hand and bite down as hard as I can.
He screams in pain and lets go of mom. Mom floors the gas and we speed down the road, both of us breathing heavily.
“I'm sorry, mama.” I tell her. Please don't let her hit me. Please let her stay the same!
“You're sorry?” She asks. I close my eyes and brace for a verbal attack. “Honey, why are you sorry? I'm sorry that I've put you through all of this! Baby, we're going to move away do your father can never find us again, okay?”
I look at her in awe. She really has changed! Finally, I smile and nod. She smiles back.
4 Years Later
“Mama, where does this box go?” I ask, holding a very heavy box in my hands. We're moving again, but back to our old town. I am most definitely happy about it.
“I don't know, what does it say?” She asks, walking into our new living room. I look down at the box.
“It says 'Bob's bananas. Handle with care'.” I tell her. We burst out laughing and I drop the box. We stop laughing and mom looks down at the box, then back at me, then starts laughing again.
“It's just clothes.” She finally says after she stops laughing. I nod and push it in a corner. I have to start a new school next week, as a sophomore. Man, time is flying by. I push my hair behind my ears and get back to work.
I should probably get my room set up tonight, then start with everything else tomorrow.
