I walked into the office Monday morning; the first day of the school year. Blake and I planned to keep our heads down this year and pass with flying colors. I quickly went up to the front desk and wove between the people. My pale green eyes scanned through the papers layered across the desk full of last names and their schedule.
Forester, Hallie. E.
Seeing mine, I quickly swiped my schedule off the desk and attempted not to slam into anyone. Looking down at the paper in my hand, I took the final steps to the exit, engrossed in the ink printed on the page. I didn't notice the person who was about to walk in. Still looking down, I swung the door open and took one step before crashing into someone. "Watch it!" A feminine voice quickly yelled as they moved aside so there wouldn't be a collision. I stumbled forward and managed not to fall. Embarrassed as ever, I quickly mumbled an apology and bent down to pick up my bag and schedule that I had dropped. I stood, and looked at the source of the voice; the oh-so-popular Jasmine Taylor. She's been in a few classes of mine throughout the years, but no words have been spoken between Jasmine and I before today. "What?" She questioned with a smirk. She was leaning against the door frame, obviously blocking my escape."You heard me." I retorted, my hand on my hip. I surprised myself; never have I been so...spunky. Ask anyone who's ever known me, I'm extremely quiet around anyone but my mom and Blake. This was definitely out of character.
"I just wanted to hear it again..." She leaned over and took the schedule out of my hand. "Hallie Elizabeth Forester." Jasmine finished. Again, she flashed that devilish grin. "Are you new? I haven't seen you around and you seem lost." Jasmine teased. I slowly pulled my paper out of her hand, which remained in the air until she let it drop moments later.
"This is the fourth year I've been here. I've been in some of your classes, too. I'm trying to keep my head down so I don't get affiliated with problematic people like you."
Jasmine's face went blank for a moment as she searched her brain, trying to remember me. She immediately flashed me the most cheesy smile you've ever seen. "Hi, I'm Jasmine Taylor. Pleasure to meet you. Can I show you around?"
This prep was pissing me off. Without a second thought I shoved past her and swung the door open. Once I walked through and was in the hallway, I turned to face Jasmine. "I think I'll be able to find my way." I replied, smug as ever. I spun back around on my heel and went to my first period.
As I walked in the door of my physics class, I saw my best friend Blake sitting at a desk. I quickly walked over and sat at the empty desk to the left of him.
"Hey." I said, letting out a sigh of relief. "You won't believe how my first day of senior year is going." I looked over to Blake's prodding eyes, and recounted the story about my morning adventure.
"Jasmine Taylor. The Jasmine Taylor?" Blake babbled. I giggled and nodded, confirming his obvious suspicion. "So you ran into her, and she wasn't a complete bitch?"
I couldn't help but smile. I squinted my eyes slightly and held up my thumb and forefinger with about an inch of space between. "A little. She's the most popular person in this idiotic school. Of course she was a little bitchy. Maybe because I almost ruined her perfect manicure, or some dumb shit like that."
Blake and I couldn't stop laughing. We gained a few weird glances from our seats in the back, but a bit of attention never killed anyone. What was the harm?
As soon as our fits of laughter decreased to red faces and teary eyes, the bell rang. My first class of my last year in this hell hole has officially began. The teacher talked for a few minutes about the syllabus she had handed out, and turned to the board, pointing out the multiple class rules listed.
"Hey." Aimee Roberts whispered after she tapped my shoulder. Aimee wasn't popular or a nobody. She was known, but ignored in big conversations. We've never spoken outside of any school-related topic longer than a few sentences. "Are you guys dating?" Aimee asked, prodding a finger at Blake and me with a questioning look.
