Chapter one
"WAKE UP TESSE!" I wake with the soothing voice, note my sarcasm, of my keeper Angel. "You've got school today. Remeber that today is the test" Angel says, emphasizing the word test. The test, as Angel called it, was the day that the Mèrrs got their jobs chosen by the Council. It happens on the month of their 18th turn of the sun. Angel goes to the kitchen to make food and I swim well more like drag myself and the golden tail behind me to the bathroom. There aren't many differences between land people and Mèrrs. The only major differences are their lack of tails and us living in the sea. Yes, still school and work, we aren't all that the legends of the land people make us up to be.
After I finish packing my backpack, I go to the kitchen to see what Angel has made. "Here you go Tesse. I made your favorite." He said, holding a plate of seaweed in front of me "thanks" I replied. Angel said he had work and had to leave and that I should be doing the same soon. We say our goodbyes and I'm alone in our pod. Angel has always been like a father to me, not that I have one. I have no memory of who my parents were and if they are even alive. Angel told me that, even thought he hadn't known them, that my parents were probably the nicest people you could meet. Look were that got them. And look where it got me. Yes, I have a Keeper that cares about me but besides him, that's it. You see, Mèrr tails are your standard color of green,red and blue.
Mine is gold.
Since I'm different, nobody really talks to me. I sit alone at lunch, while everyone is talking about who's the hottest Mèrr in school as they eat their food and sit on chairs, showing off their regular tail colors. But those are the nice ones, most just point and laugh, whispering probably offensive things about me and laughing again. My only friend is Angel and the occasional fish that passes by me, but even they sometimes stare at my odd colored tail.

As I reach the Coral high school, I take in the building, I never get tired of it. The name suits it, as it looks like a giant, elegant coral, spiraling staircases and vintage classrooms that look like coral.
The coral like building was white with gold highlights here and there.
My daydreaming is cut off by the screeching voice in front of me. Alondra " LOOK IT'S THE 'golden girl' (an: sorry! I had to)" she screams, making everyone in a five foot raidius stare and laugh.
My face heated up and I swam as far as my tail could take me, all the way to the back row of first period. A teacher, Ms. Alva, turns around "Hello Tesse, I know this is first period, and that you're usually very early" she pauses " but you have to go to the carriage station and go all the way to the Council's hq."
Carriages are what land people call busses. It's big, it's metal and is powered by sandstone.
I thank Ms. Alva and leave, trying to swim past Alondra without detection. Thankfully, no one knows back exits like I do so everything goes smoothly until someone bumps into me.
Crap.
"Oh I'm so sorry!" says the brunnete I bumped into. She keeps apologizing until she is quieted as she looks at my tail. "I thought I was the only one.." she whispered to herself. Only one? If there was an only one it would be me and besides, her tail was a bright red. But just as I'm about to ask her what she means she swims so fast I almost thought I imagined her.
As I get to the carriage station, I start to get nervous. What if I get a bad job? What if I get banished because of my tail? All of these questions flooded my mind. I almost didn't realize that the carriage had arrived. I pay the carriage fee and I go sit down, trying to calm myself down.
If only then I knew that the job I would get was the least of my problems.
