When I was a little girl, my mom always played the what if game with me. What if the house caught on fire or what if mommy fell down and didn't get back up. Then I would have to show her what I would do. The what if game wasn't played for what was happening today.

"Thea, are you ready to go?" My mom yelled from downstairs.

I was looking into the mirror of a girl I've never seen before. The mascara had made my eye lashes even longer than they already are. My brunette hair was pulled up into a messy, but formal bun, and my black dress was short and showed my shoulders. I chose black because of how pale I am, but almost changed right then and there into something that didn't show my shoulders. Until my mom came into my room.

"Honey, what's wrong? We are all waiting for you downstairs."

I took a deep breath. "Nothing just nervous. Let's go!"

I went downstairs to my dad who was already taking candid pictures. Riley was sitting on the floor, playing with his cars. He looked so helpless. He didn't have to deal with the stresses of going to a school dance or the opposite sex.

"You look so beautiful Althea." My dad started to cry.

This was the first time I've seen my dad cry, with the exception of when Riley was born.

"It's okay dad! I'm still your little girl." I said as I patted him on the back. "Let's get some pictures together then we can get going to Sam's"

When we got to Sam's, my parents took lots of pictures of Sam and me with our dates. Sam's date was a family friends son who she dispiesed, but her parents made her go with him. I, on the other hand, invited my best guy friend Beau.

Beau had his brown hair combed over and was wearing a tux, but his very tan skin could still be seen on his neck.

"You look so beautiful." Beau said, causing me to blush.

"Thanks. You don't look too bad yourself." I should have come up with something else to say, but just couldn't. I've always had this feeling that Beau may like me, but I never thought of him like that.

"I need to borrow her for a few minutes." Sam said as she walked up to us and pulled me away. "He's staring at you like you are a piece of meat." She whispered as we walked away.

Sam and I took even more pictures together then we hopped in the limo and headed for the dance. Beau wasn't a dancer so he mostly sat at the table with his friends, with the exception of the slow dances. He kept asking me to dance with him, but I kept saying no. Toward the end of the dance I finally gave in.

"You look like you are having a lot of fun out there dancing." Beau said, looking into my eyes as we danced.

"Yeah I am! I love dancing like crazy with all my friends." I said, breaking eye contact with him.

I looked back into his eyes and realized just how blue they really are. I've never been this close to his face before to realize he had a perfect face. No pimples, beauty marks or even freckles. I, on the other hand, have many freckles on my cheeks. Make up covered those up for me tonight though.

Beau really was the perfect guy. He was sweet, caring, and honest, but Beau had been my best friend since first grade. I'm not sure how it happened, but Beau kissed me on the dance floor that night. My very first and only kiss was with my best friend.

I'm glad I was able to share something so special with someone that special. What if I never get to experience anything like that again with anyone?
