There's an adrenaline that surges through you. It's like sparks are flying. Everything you ever dreamed for, finally happening. A sudden realization that your life will never be the same again. The future gets altered to fit your new responsibility.

The screaming stung his ears as his wife was rushed through the hospital doors. Everything he ever dreamed for, finally happening. He knew his life was changing. He was becoming a father. Just the thought of holding something he had help create was mind-blowing. But what was even more unbelievable was the fact that he had created life, a little being. Someone new was coming into the world.

His own son or daughter would be in his arms soon. He'd get to look at the small face that would have some of his features, but also his wife's.

"Sir, something has gone terribly wrong. I can't allow you through," a doctor stated, jolting the brunet man, with chocolate brown eyes and a blinding smile, out of his thoughts.

"Sir, with all do respect, that is my wife having my baby," the man pointed out.

"I understand that, but I still can't let you through."

"Why not?" the man said, worriedly. "I want to witness my child's birth."

The doctor shook his head. With everything happening, he just couldn't tell this man his wife may die. It was too risky. He'd panic. This would be his wife, the mother of his unborn child, that he's losing. Soon, this man would be celebrating life and death in one or two hours. He was gaining his child, but losing the love of his life.

"That's confidential. I'm sorry. Sir-"

"Call me Luke," Luke cut him off.

"Luke, I just cannot let you through. I understand that you want to see your son or daughter enter this world, but in some cases, we can't let the father through. I'm sorry, and you will understand soon. I feel terrible."

Luke nodded, not saying anything more and heading to his seat. He knew he'd be dealing with his wife, May, soon. Could she possibly be dying from childbirth? No. That couldn't happen. His baby will need their mother. Luke didn't want to believe that he was losing his wife. It can't be true. Oh, God, what if it is? Luke needed to stay strong. His wife needed him now more than anything.

He couldn't keep still, he had to occupy his mind somehow. Luke suddenly stood up and walked toward the coffee pot. Coffee seemed to be his best friend. It helped him get through everything. He knew that he would be facing something horrible soon and wanted to cope with his favourite beverage. He stirred in some hazelnut creamer and sugar before taking that first sip.

He let his mind wander as he tasted the warm sensation the coffee left on his tongue. What would life be like with the baby? Would it be hectic? How many sleepless nights were there going to be? Was it a boy or girl? What would he name it? Would being a single parent be hard? No, Luke couldn't think like that. May would be around. Luke won't be a single father, he had to believe that. But it seemed the longer the wait, the more likely his thoughts would become true.

A tear slipped from his eye and he quickly wiped it away. He had to be strong. Think happy thoughts. He was gonna be a dad very soon. He had to be strong for his baby.

Luke sat back down in the uncomfortable plastic chair. A doctor, May's doctor, walking in with a pink bundle. He spotted Luke and handed the small bundle to him. Luke took the bundle, cradling it. He looked into the bundle, seeing a baby. But not just any baby, his baby.

"She's precious," Luke whispered. "Hello, sweetie, I'm Daddy."

The doctor smiled, knowing that Luke would make an amazing father. But he also felt bad for the baby girl, knowing who would be missing. At least, they would be missing until Luke did something about it, which could be a while from now.
