Prolog
The people of earth are judged only on their looks. Not there personality, intelligence, or talent, just their looks. This world is ruled by the most ‘perfect’ looking people, the government made of stupid, ignorant men and women because they are ‘good looking’. They believe the world can only be made perfect when it looks perfect, and anything less than perfect should be hidden, never to be seen.
The children in this world are taken from their parents as soon as they are born, never to be seen unless they are put back into the sections they were born on the Section Day. It’s the day in the middle of the year when all the 10 year olds are taken to the center of the city, being told there sections they are to be put in. But there are small exceptions. Parents can choice to pay a great sum of money to keep their children, or pay a slightly smaller sum of money to have them come straight home before Section Day for their age group.
There are five sections of the world. The first is The Government, located in far western America (any place other than America destroyed, flooded, or bombed, including former Canada, its uninhabitable). They live in the most luxurious places, every meal being gourmet. They are the few that are allowed to keep their children for free once they are born, regardless of looks, because, they have so much advancement that they can make anyone look pretty. In the center of the city is fenced off; it’s where the children are. In there is a school, and houses, 25 kids in each, but only like 20 beds, so usually the most ugly kids sleep on the floor. Also inside is one bathroom, and a kitchen that they are taught to use at a young age so they can cook for themselves.
The second section is the farming and power section, located near the government. The people consist of people of all looks. It’s the only thing this country gives us a choice on. On the Section Day, you are given the choice to work in farming and power. Only ten kids are allowed per year, five for farming, and five for power. And if your name is the last to be called, most of time the slots will be filled and you are forced to go to the place chosen for you.
The third section is the beautiful section, located next to the farming in the middle of America. This is where the second most attractive live, second only to the Government. The ones destined for this section and the Government is usually boastful and confident, putting people down because of their beauty and attractiveness. These are the ones who mostly pay to keep their children or pay to have them come straight home afterwards. Very few born in other sections are chosen to come here. Their houses are large, almost mansion-like. They are allowed as much food as they like, hiring the ones from the ugliest section to clean and cook for them. They are allowed 10 pets of any kind, they get to choose.
The fourth section is the average section, located almost on the east coast and next to the beautiful section, separated by a fence. They have largely-portioned amount of food delivered to their doorstep every week, according to how many family members they have, which is usually a husband and wife, occasionally a child that has come back. Their houses are two bedrooms and one bathroom, a medium sized kitchen and a medium sized fenced in backyard. They may have one dog and one cat, the Government giving them the food for the pets and pay for the care for the animals.
And the fifth section, the Uglies, located on the east coast. It is separated by a huge electric fence, have little contact from and other sections. The Government flies in once a month, giving out rations to the people there, consisting of a small amount of bread and water, a small amount of medicine upon request, and three pairs of clothes, ether to big or to small, occasionally giving them seeds to plant something (only when the only person with a heart in the government creates the bag, Veronica Noland). They have a small farm near a beach that the government doesn’t know about. Their houses are small, built into cliffs or made out of mud, a few out on concrete. The town center is a trading place, where you trade things that were smuggled in for other sections, sometimes getting luxury items such as a necklace in exchange for something rare, like a bird or a light bulb given by a nice person in the average section. Few weapons are smuggled in or made, and the people who use them to hunt have a high trading power. They are sometimes mean, sometimes nice, you can never tell. Many of them write, writing on tree bark or the occasional paper. Books are rare, and all are written within the section. They are traded for a great price. Some kids steal text books from the school they used to go to, trying to better their education, or just trading them for food.
I was born to Uglies parents, and now live with the other kids. Section Day is going to be in a year, and I am told I will be an Uglie, but I don't know. I might be beautiful. It's impossible to know when you never get told you are. But I believe that being beautiful on the inside is more important. But that's just my opinion. No one else in this world thinks the same, that I know of. My name is Elisa, and I hate the Government.
