She lived for those three words. They were everywhere. On her notebook, her hand, all her papers. She painted it on her wall. No one knew what she meant. Except me. I experienced it. With her.
Her name was Christine, or Chris. I was fortunate enough to spend my senior year by her side. She was different from everyone. She was quiet and shy. You could typically find Chris sitting alone somewhere with her head lowered and her hand working its magic on a piece of sketch paper. She always had her long, wavy brown hair tucked behind her right ear and her several rope bracelets shook around her small wrist. She was beautiful. I remember the way her eyes sparkled on that day she first looked up at me. I remember everything.
The lunch bell finally rang and I rushed from my 5th period class. I was starving and already done with the day. While I was fat walking to the snack cart, I almost stepped on a girl that was sitting under a tree.
"Sorry! I didn't see you there." I stopped and looked down at her. She looked up at me slowly and spoke quietly.
"It's okay." She was very pretty. I was sure I would have noticed her before.
"Um..I'm Noah.."
"Chris." She focused back on her notebook and continued writing. I shrugged and continued walking. After I got my food I headed back to her.
"Hi." I said, "do you mind if I sit down?"
"Go ahead"
"Cool" I sat down by her and opened my bag of chips.
"Want some?"
"Sure." She reached her hand in and took a small handful. I noticed she had writing on her hand.
"What s'at on your hand?" I asked as I tossed a couple chips in my mouth. She showed me her hand and I read 'Time Stands Still' in her neat handwriting.
"What does that mean?" I asked. She looked at me and smiled sweetly.
"Maybe you'll be the one that finds out."
That didn't help me understand but I just shrugged my shoulders. We sat for another 15 minutes or so. I discovered her full name was Christine Wolf and that she had been here since sophomore year. I learned that she sort of based her life around these three words that she'd written on her hand."Do you want to sit together again tomorrow?" She asked as she put her notebook in her backpack and stood up.
"I'd love to" I say and smiled at her. She smiled back and we parted ways to get back to class. At the end of the day I found her again.
"Hey, Chris!" I waved at her.
"Hi."
"Um so..I was wondering if maybe I could have your number?" I asked as I scratched the back of my neck. She just smiled at me.
"I thought you'd never ask." She handed me a folded piece of part she took out of her pocket. We talked for an hour that night.
