"Mmm... these cupcakes are delicious Mrs Wallis!" Miller compliments between bites of his cake. I giggle at his enthusiasm and Mum smiles kindly at him.
"Thank you Miller, I'm glad you like them. I'll put some in a box so you can take some home to your family. I'd like to meet your mum as well." She says and places some cupcakes into a Tupperware tub for him.
"Thanks! I'll tell my mum to come over and say hello later on" He promises, finally finishing his cupcake. He glances over at me and grins. I still can't figure him out. He certainly looks like the type of guy I'd go out of my way to avoid in school, but I feel wrong judging him like this when he's only been nice to me so far. He raises his eyebrows at me, when he catches me staring at him and I blush.
I really need to get this annoying blushing thing under control.
"So what school are you starting?" My mum asks him, seeming to notice the awkward silence that has settled in the room.
"Eden goes to Fairmeadow High" she explains while placing three glasses on the counter and pouring lemonade into them. She places one in front of each of us, and I gulp mine down thankful for the distraction.
"Yeah that's where I'm going as well" he says, and nudges me again. I almost spit out my lemonade, shaking my head as I stare at him incredulously.
"Seriously. Are you like stalking me or something?" I tease playfully.
He looks at me with a funny stare before reminding me that Fairmeadow high is the only high school in this town. Oh yeah. I feel stupid again and roll my eyes laughing. He runs his hand through his hair again, messing it in a way that only makes him look even more attractive than he already is. I suddenly feel my mums watchful gaze looking back and forth between the two of us, and she fixes me with a questioning look. I silently tell her I'll explain everything later. She only grins back.
"Well Miller it's been great meeting you. I'd definitely love to meet the rest of your family. In fact I was planning on having a barbecue at the weekend, you and your family are welcome to join us." she offers and passes him the tub of cupcakes. She tucks her short brown hair behind her ears and grins. I frown to myself. I'm pretty certain we weren't planning on having a barbecue this weekend. Knowing mum it's probably one of her ploys to get me to see him again.
"That'd be great thanks" he says "I'll see you later, oh and thanks for this again" he says holding up the box of cupcakes.
Leading him out of the kitchen and to the front door, he turns to me and offers me a breathtaking smile that reaches his eyes and makes my stomach flutter again. Bringing his hand to the back of his neck he rubs it self consciously and I fold my arms to stop myself from fidgeting. I open the door for him and he steps out onto the path.
"Well, I guess I'll see you at school tomorrow" he says. "Hey do you want me to give you a ride to school in my car tomorrow morning?"
"Thanks, but I prefer my bike" I tell him and nod towards my bike currently leaning against the tree in my front garden. He suddenly looks a little disappointed, but I don't understand why. I figure he doesn't need to know about my fear of being in cars.
"Okay, well I'll look out for you in school tomorrow" he grins once more and begins walking away. He turns and waves, and I wave back before stepping back inside and quietly closing the door.
Walking into the living room I throw myself onto the couch and sigh. My phone suddenly buzzes from my dress pocket and I unlock it to discover a text from my best friend Carter.
*Omg Eden, did you know there's a new guy starting school tomorrow? I wonder what he looks like*
I giggle and roll my eyes at her text. Of course Carter has already heard about Miller, she's obsessed with guys, even though she's always to shy to actually talk to any of them.
*Yeah I know. I wonder* I reply back bemusedly. I decide not to let on that I already know him, and let her figure it out for herself tomorrow. I laugh out loud as I imagine her reaction when she does finally come to the realization.
Mum puts her head around the door and looks at me questioningly. "What are you laughing about to yourself in here?" she asks confused.
I hold up my phone, and explain Carters text. She laughs "God, that girl is obsessed with boys." She puts her hands on her hips and looks at me expectantly, "speaking of boys..."
I feel myself blushing and rolling my eyes at the same time. "Arrgghh it's nothing mum! I just met Miller at the library, and helped him find his way home!" I mutter, I put my hands over my face self consciously.
She giggles at my reaction at the mention of Miller "Uh huh, well he's certainly is cute" she says and turns to go back to the kitchen.
"Muuum!" I exclaim embarrassed and reach for the cushion on the sofa beside me, aiming at her retreating back, where it lands on the floor with a soft thud. She just turns and laughs at me shaking her head and finally she's out of sight. I close my eye's and immediately an image of Miller appears before my closed eyelids. I snap my eyes open and mentally roll my eyes at myself. Miller will probably get to school tomorrow, and come to the realization that i'm not worth hanging around with.
I sigh, reaching for a book on the coffee table in front of me.
I could really do without a boy coming and messing up my perfectly fine life right now. But with what I already know about him, I know he probably has other ideas in mind.
