Ezra lay on his bunk, feeling overwhelmed. Yes, they had gotten Kanan back.... But the Inquisitor was dead. That would take some getting used to. In a good way. No more pain. His fingers lightly brushed the red, deep scarring marks on his cheek.
And hopefully, no more encounters with the dark side like on that asteroid. That was his fault. Stupid Quizzy.
"Ezra?" He heard a voice outside his door. Kanan. "Can I come in?"
Ezra decided to surprise him and used the Force to open the door, catching Kanan off guard.
"You've really improved, kid." The cowboy Jedi smiled, walking into the bedroom. Other than a slight limp in his powerful stride, Kanan had received no further physical injuries from his captors. That alone had been nearly enough to make Ezra and the Ghost crew weep with joy. When Ezra had first seen Kanan, aboard that Star Destroyer in his cell, strapped to a metal table, he had been terrified for Kanan's safety. The thought of Kanan injured or permanently maimed.... Ezra would do anything to prevent that. Even kiss a Lothcat. And even thinking about death....
"Thanks." Ezra hopped down from his bunk with a spin. "What is it? A mission? Training? Another plan to get us all killed?" He said that last part sarcastically, with a slight grin on his face.
Kanan chuckled. "Sorry kid. None of that."
"Them what is it?"
Kanan scratched his neck nervously. "I was hoping maybe we could.... You know, just um, talk. A lot has happened recently and uh.... Well.... I want to make sure you're okay."
"Uh.... Okay."
The two sat down simultaneously on the lower bunk, Zeb's bunk, neither quite sure of what to do or say. Neither was used to having a heart-to-heart before.
"So.... Are you okay?" Kanan asked. Ezra laughed at him.
"You are REALLY bad at heart-to-hearts, Kanan."
"I know." He admitted, grinning. Then his smile faded as he turned serious. "If you don't want to answer this, you don't have to. What happened after the Inquisitor.... You know...."
"Scarred me and made me fall to what should have been my death?" Ezra finished. Kanan nodded. "I remember falling and then seeing only black upon impact. Then I heard voices.... Of different people I've known throughout my life, speaking to me. Calling my name. The crew.... My parents. Anyone important to me.
"The last voice was the most important, I think. It was my mother's voice. When I heard it, I could almost feel her voice telling me that I could die, or live. That it was up to me. My will would be the deciding factor in whether I lived or died.
"I chose to live. I didn't want to leave the rebellion, to leave the fight for peace and freedom, to leave the crew."
Ezra gave Kanan a heartfelt look.
"And I didn't want to leave you. After all you have done for me, taking me in, training me, sacrificing yourself for me and the crew.... And being the father I haven't had in so many years now...." The boy's eyes glistened with tears. "I didn't want to leave you. I couldn't.
"And then I woke up. I saw you fighting the Inquisitor, found my scars on my cheek, and then used the Force to make my way up to you. I was standing a distance behind you when the Inquisitor died. And.... Well, you know the rest."
Ezra didn't realize Kanan was hugging him until he snapped out of his memories and found strong arms embracing him.
"Ezra.... I know I can never be your 'real' father. But I promise you, I will always be there for you. You're like a son to me.... You're family. And I know the others agree with me."
Ezra smiled and hugged his Master back.
When the two broke apart, Kanan laughed slightly. "You know, when I first met you, I thought you were a street rat. I thought that Hera would realize you weren't meant to be on our ship and would kick you off. I doubted you so many times and for that I'm sorry. But now I can see how wrong I was. I had some of the dark side in me.... Everyone has a little, but I had too much. I was still struggling with my grief over the Order. But when you came, everything changed. I've become more caring. I've become more in tune with the light side. I've changed because of you."
"We both have. I used to only think about myself and about profit. But that's not who I am anymore. You and the crew have made me a better person, Kanan. You're the best family I could ever ask for." The Padawan replied. No, not the Padawan. His Padawan.
"Thanks kid. My Padawan." Kanan said quietly, smiling. He sensed Ezra beaming at that statement. My Padawan.... "So.... You okay?"
Ezra laughed. "Yeah, I'm okay. The Inquisitor is gone. You're alive and well. I have a great crew and family that loves me. Well, except for Zeb some of the time. What more could I ask for? Besides, our biggest threat is gone. What else could possibly be worse than the Inquisitor?"
If only you knew Ezra.... If only you knew.
That's it for my one-shot! I hope you enjoyed it and leave a comment about what you liked about it and if you would like me to write more one-shots in the future. If so, what about? May the Force be with you,
