JAYDEN
The first thing I feel when I wake up is anxiety.
That awful feeling in the pit of
my stomach that everything will go wrong today. It's burning in the back of my tired eyes, the feeling of what if.
I'm not nervous because it's my first day of high school. I'm nervous because I decided that today is the day I come out to my parents as a lesbian.
I fight my fear and roll out of bed, slowly walking out of my room like a zombie.
My day starts normally, but I know today will not be normal.
I come downstairs to eat breakfast and face my mom. "Jayden!" She greets me excitedly. "You're in high school now. My baby's all grown up. Maybe you'll even get a boyfriend this year." I cringe internally.
"Yeah..." I say awkwardly, wanting to be sucked into a black hole.
I zone out as she says a gazillion sappy words about how I'm starting high school, occasionally nodding or saying 'yeah' so I can at least pretend to be listening.
When the talk is over, I toast myself a bagel and run to catch the bus. I kiss my mother goodbye and dart to catch the bus.
