"I would be nothing without your love"03
Growing up with drug addicts was tough. Having two parents smoke their heads off and further share a wrap of weed as a sign of love was something no child should ever experience.
Drugs had made his childhood a living hell. His parents were worse than nonchalant and irresponsible; they caused him physical pains. His mother would be so high off that she wouldn't even be able to save him from the throes of child abuse.
He was reviled at at a young age, reminded everyday that he was useless and worthless; he could become nothing in life.
His will, coupled with the love of his life by his side, had pushed him to prove those words wrong. He did not let words define him. He was who he was. He could have laid back and relented, letting the words that played over again in his subconscious take over his whole life. But yet, he fought. He never gave up.
Getting a scholarship into Oxford was one aspect of his dreams come true and he made full use of such opportunity. He had a girlfriend that lived miles away and the distance was straining their relationship. They spoke regularly, on a daily basis, but with time, the calls reduced until it was almost nothing. She broke up with him because she also had to build up her life. He understood it all.
It was the final day of his university life and he was graduating. Kris was nowhere to be found yet. As he gave his speech, he craned his neck just slightly, hoping to find her in the crowd, flashing him her brilliant smile that made the earth stop spinning. He looked around for the beautiful brunette with the thick-rimmed glasses but she was not there.
He got back to his seat and brought out his phone; he had missed calls from the same number, a number he couldn't recognise. He redialled the number and got the shock of his life. His girlfriend was in the ER. She overdosed on drugs.
______________
She was to be taken to rehab but they managed to pull through. He was there. Just like she wanted. Just like she made him believe.
"Now that you're here, I don't need drugs to help me forget... forget it all," she had whispered to him.
He believed her. He always believed her.
Months passed and one day, he barged in on her injecting herself. He merely stopped midstep and watched in shock. He could not believe his eyes. Something in him snapped and he felt disappointment surge through him. Not only that but for the first time, he also felt anger.
He yelled at her, she yelled back. He smashed a vase, she broke down in tears. He couldn't bear the streaks of eyeliner and mascara on her face so he gathered her in his arms. She raised her face and kissed him hard. She tasted of what she had just taken.
This reminded him of his anger but also the love he felt towards her.
That day marked the end of a real relationship and the beginning of an addiction.
