Dean first met Cas during biology class. Dean found the subject and the teacher irrevocably boring, and he sat there and uninterestedly doodled all over his sheet with his pen. His gaze eventually slid from the teacher to the wide-eyed boy sitting next to him, listening intently. Castiel Novak, that was his name. They would never talk, merely acknowledge each other's existence. That is, until they started the plant unit.

This unit meant the worst for Dean, finding it stupid that they were analyzing weeds that grow from the depths of hell probably. What made it worse was that their teacher was making them dissect those sons of bitches and look at their parts for the next two and a half months in order to learn about them in a 'hands-on' fashion. The only upside that Dean saw to this was that he got to be paired up with Cas.

He was eager to learn about the plants firsthand, and Dean would watch as he held the tweezers gently as he yanked off the petals of the daisies they were using. He helped sometimes, but he mostly used this time to talk to Castiel.

The blue-eyed boy with the messy black hair and the deep voice and trenchcoat was more interesting than he let on, and even though Dean wouldn't admit it to himself in a million years, he found himself infatuated. Infatuated with the way his eyes would sparkle like ice when the light hit them, how his teeth would show when he smiled even though he said he didn't like them, how he lovingly talked about dorky things like books or plants or even bees. He grinned widely at him when he told him about how he liked listening to bands like Queen or The Beatles.

Dean soon found out from Castiel that he was gay and currently single, by accident of course. As he apologized to him profusely and Dean reassured him that it was fine, something stirred inside of him. Maybe he had a chance. Maybe they had a chance. He shook his head quickly. No, he was his science partner. And plus, he was straight. Why was he suddenly intrigued by this boy who sat next to him in biology who had eyes that held the stars within them?

The last day of the unit came and went, and their teacher announced they'd be moving on to the human body next. But Dean found himself never wanting to end the unit, not wanting to go back to square one with Castiel and never talking to him again unless it was strictly work related. Cas didn't seem affected at all, always ready to learn, but was still as open and kind to Dean as he ever was. It was that day that he let slip that his favorite flowers were blue dendrobium orchids, and Dean decided that he wouldn't let this boy escape through his fingers so easily.

His locker was right next to the classroom, as he's seen Cas put books inside multiple times. Even when Dean was walking towards the locker the day after, doubts surfaced rapidly. Maybe this was a bad idea, what happens if he doesn't like the gesture? Dean was planning to keep it anonymous, after all. But he was still nervous that either Cas would put two and two together and he'd never talk to Dean again because of what a creep he was, or that he would find the gesture random and never acknowledge it. Either way, it was too late. He wasn't going to keep a damn flower inside his bag for the rest of the day.

That morning, he hadn't wanted Sammy to think he was getting soft or anything, so after he dropped him off at his school he went to the nearby florist. Unfortunately for Dean, he couldn't get one or two of those blue flowers, but instead a whole bouquet of them for less money. He had quickly plucked one of them out of the group and dropped them off at his house, avoiding his father's questions strategically. Dean was nearly late for school, but he got there just in time with the flower tucked gently into his bag.

Right before going into the science classroom, he tucked the blue orchid into the thin opening of the locker. Dean smiled a little as he looked at the flower and thought of Cas' eyes. Castiel was already sitting in his seat, and Dean felt a shudder of nerves go down his spine. Cas gave his daily "Hello, Dean," his smile gracing his face. As he sat down next to Cas, greeting him as normally as possible, the strangest questions started flitting through his head. What happens if it falls out of the locker? What if someone else takes it? It was agonizing sitting through the lesson, his jitters so visible that even Castiel asked if he was alright.
