I arrived home to my mother and little brother gossiping in the kitchen about a new kid in Matiás' class at school.
"Your dad called today, he wants you to phone him back." My mother told me as I dumped my bag on one of the kitchen stools.
"I'll call him just now." Picking up the house phone, I dialled the number and wandered into the living room, plonking myself down onto the sofa. The phone rang a couple of times before a familiar voice came on the other end.
"Hello?" There was a buzz in the background.
"Hey dad." I replied.
"Oh hey sweet pea, how are you feeling today?"
"Okay, my leg isn't sore at all, I can't wait to get away from these crutches." I explained.
"How's school?" And with that we ended up in a really long winded conversation about school and other things I didn't care about until I eventually found the balls to ask what I really wanted to ask.
"Dad, when are you coming home?" There was silence on the other end of the phone.
"Well, you know I've got to work sweet pea, and your mother and I, we just need some time apart." He explained. I didn't really buy it. Why can't they just sort it out, as a family.
"Whatever dad, I'll speak to you later." I rung off the phone before he could answer. As I walked back through to the living room, my mother interrogated me on my phone call."I don't know." Was the answer to most of her questions until eventually I got her off my back and she ordered pizza for dinner and the three of us sat watching prime time TV whilst stuffing our faces. The doorbell went around seven o'clock.
"Mila, it's your friends." My mother called and I sighed. Leaving my brother, I headed to the front door to see not only Jade but Jace and Tay also, probably stoned as shit.
"Hey Mila, we were in the neighbourhood, want to come get some ice-cream with us?" Jade asked. Yet again, she'd dyed her hair. It was a nasty seaweed green this time; not my favourite look. Haven't these kids ever heard of phones before, instead of turning up at my house? I looked at my mother.
"Go ahead." She replied. She was so much more lenient when my father wasn't here. "Take some money." She got out her purse as I struggled to pull some shoes on and handed me a couple of notes. "Crutches?" She asked as I went to bounce out the door.
"I don't think I need 'em." I replied, shifting my jeans to be more comfortable.
"Ok, have fun and be home by eleven." My mother kissed me on the head and I waved goodbye to my brother before heading towards the car with Jade and her two followers.
"How's the bite?" Tay asked as we climbed into the car and slammed the doors shut.
"This is my little brother Damen, he tagging along tonight." Jade interrupted before I could reply. A boy with jet black hair and the same nose as Jade sat in the backseat, squished in the middle of the two guys who played professional football. He only looked about a year younger, if that.
"Hey, I'm Mila. Nice to meet you." I stuck out my hand and he shook it firmly.
"I'm meeting his boyfriend tonight." Jade explained, winking at me as she started the car and Damen's face turned a big red. "Always a bit nerve-wracking inviting your other half to meet the fam."
Jade was a lunatic driver and she put me on edge, literally, every time she turned a corner until she drew to a sharp halt at the local ice cream parlour in town, almost smacking my head off the dashboard if I hadn't been wearing a seatbelt .
"Let's go." Jace shouted, climbing out the backseat; clearly excited at the prospect of ice-cream.
"So have you spoke to Luke recently?" Jade asked me as we walked behind.
"No, and I don't plan on it." I replied quickly.
"Oh."
"What?"
"I kinda invited him."
"You what?"
"Sorry." She had a sheepish look on her face as we entered into the 60's style parlor and found a seat in a large red booth. "Damen, where's your date?" She shouted to her brother from across the table.
"Right there." He replied and we all looked round."Mason?" I blurted out. "Drew?"
"This is my boyfriend Mason everybody." Damen announced, jumping up and holding his hand tightly. They both smiled nervously at each other.
"Wait how do you know them?" Jade asked me as everyone found a seat; Drew slipping in beside me.
"Well Mason is in my English class, and Drew and I, well we're kind of together." I explained and she done a silent 'oh fuck' face.
"Luke's coming." Blurted Jade, a look of shock mixed on her face. "Fuck sorry, I had no idea." Drew found my hand under the table and held it in his. Truth is, Drew was probably one of the nicest people I'd ever met and for a few weeks now; he'd been the one holding my hand and kissing my cheek, winding his arm round my shoulders at the movies and giving me his jacket when the sun got down and the temperature grew low. And now Luke was probably going to fuck it all up.~~~~~~~
