"Thank you again!" I yell out after my parents get into their car without looking back.
Being 23 years old is suppost to be the peak of every girls life- the time to find your true self, fall in love, and eventually, heartbreak, or at least thats what some of my friends used to say back where I'm from.
I don't like looking back at my old life. The only thing i regret was leaving my parents to be in Florida- but i knew i had to be on my own for a while, for my sake.
I carry the last box of things my parents gave me inside the building and up the stairs to my third floor apartment. Its not big but its a start.
I place the box in the kitchen counter along with my others. I pick up the box labeled 'KITCHEN' and start taking things out one by one.
Pot, into the cabinet. Forks, into the drawer. Cups, in the cupboard and so on and so forth.
I put the empty box on the table that stands in the middle of the kitchen, where ill be eating most of my food in the next few months.
I pick up the next box entitled 'MY ROOM'. All this box really had in it was pictures of me and my old friends and some sentimental things. I only brought a few of my favourite outfits in my luggage- ill have to do some shopping later.
I walk past the couch and television into the room i will soon be calling my own, and sit in the bed, putting the box beside me. I reach in and pull out a picture of me and my friends on spring break back in '08.
Me and the girls spent the week at my aunts cottage, most of the girls brought their boyfriends but not me. I havnt really had many relationships. I guess i just haven't met that special guy, maybe my expectations are to high. I don't know.
I place the picture down on the bedside table beside my bed and take out some more pictures from the box and put them all around my room.
I walk back into the kitchen and put the box with the other empty one. I grab my luggage thats just sitting by the front door and drag it into my room-putting away the few outfits i have into my closet.
I put away my last outfit- a ocean blue dress with white polkadots, this is the outfit i would want to wear on that date, if i ever find him.
Two hours later everything is unpacked. I check my phone 12:30pm, might as well go get some lunch or something.
I open the door to my apartment, walk past the other dorms and walk down the stairs. I pass the second floor and a woman probably in her thirties walks up the stairs passing me with a big box in her hand. I try and squeeze by. but it takes up nearly the entire staircase. I bump into it.
"Oh my gosh im so sorry!" I bend down picking up the woman's purse, she dropped when she bumped into me.
"No worries." She says putting her box down on the step in front of her.
"Do you need any help bringing this stuff to your room?" I say giving her back her purse.
"No i'm alright. Thanks for offering, i'm Jen, i'm just moving in on the fifth floor." She says taking back her purse.
"Are you sure? You look like your having some trouble." I say demanding i'd help her.
"Ok maybe a little." She says and we laugh. I take some of the pieces of clothing hanging out the top of the box and follow her up the stairs and to the right.
We reach her door and she puts the box down to unlock the door and i follow her in. Her apartment doesn't look much different from mine.
She puts the box down on the table beside the entrance.
"Where should i put these?" I ask shyly.
"On the chair." She points to the chair beside a small coffee table in the corner of her apartment. I walk over and drop them off were she asked, fixing them to look presentable.
"Need anything else?" I insist.
"No i'm great thanks uhm... Um..."
"Lily." I say reaching out to shake Jens hand.
"Nice to officially meet you." We both laugh.
"Say Jen I was just gunna go get a sandwich or something before i bumped into you, you wanna join me? Im afraid id get lost but with two of us I'm sure we'll be fine." I say with a smile hoping I wont have to be alone on my first day away from what i used to know.
"Yea sure." She says grabbing her keys, we walk out the door and down the stairs right past the front desk and outside the building.
Jen walks up to her car and unlocks the doors.
"Hey Jen do you mind if we walk? We might as well see if theres anyplace near here we'd like." I say- well since i don't have a car i don't wanna know where things are further from my apartment.
"Yea sure." She says closing the door. We both head off past the parking lot and onto the sidewalk, starting our day.
