                         Chapter 3: A New Friend

Summer was coming to an end when Casey was looking for a school for Max and Leia to attend. Max and Leia had discussed what grade level they should each be in. Casey decided it would be best to take them to the school they would attend to be evaluated so they would know which grade they should enter. It was decided that Max would be a senior and Leia would be a sophomore.

The closer it came to school starting, the more nervous the aliens became. They watched as many movies as they could to prepare. They made sure they watched modern films that were about teenagers.

Finally, the first day of school had come. Leia had never been so nervous about anything before. She was never nervous about school on her home world, but this wasn’t her home world, not even close. Casey walked them both in and talked to the principal. He gave them their class schedules and locker combinations.

After a hug for luck to each of them, Casey left.

“This is it, Max,” Leia fought back tears, “I’m so scared.”

“There is no need. We are still in the same building, I’m sure we’ll see each other,” he hugged her, “It is fine.”

Leia held on to him with all her might, “Alright, I will trust your judgment.”

“Good idea.”

“I love you, Max.”

“And I you, Leia.”

They went their own ways. Max stood still a second, took a deep breath in, and started down the hall. Everyone stared at him. This was the first time that he really felt like an alien. It seemed as though no one knew how to smile here. He smiled at people, but since he got no response, he decided to stop. Maybe teenagers here didn’t smile? He thought, “Everyone smiled in You’re So Cupid. I just don’t get it.”

Then, when he was almost at his locker, a cute girl that had light brown hair parted to one side and clipped back, smiled at him.

He, of course, smiled back. When he came to his locker, the young lady spoke, “Hi.”

“Hello,” Max said, startled that she talked to him.

“I’m Annie,” she put out her hand.

“I’m Maxwell,” he shook it.

“Really? Dude you have an awesome name.”

“Thank you, your name is… cool.”

“Aw thanks. You don’t think it’s a little lame? You know “Annie get your gun”, Little Orphan Annie.”

“No.”

She smiled, “New guy, huh?”

Max nodded.

“I was new last year. Everyone here treats the new kid like he’s some kind of alien.”

“Alien?”

“Yeah. Oh, am I in the way of your locker?”

“No, it is this one,” he pulled out the combination and opened his locker.

Annie pointed to the locker next to his, “This is mine.”

“Really? That’s splendid.”

She smiled at his response, “So, what classes are you in?”

“Oh, all honors.”

“Me too.”

“That is delightful!”
