I tried to tell him that I wanted to go to the vending machines. My words weren't working. I couldn't get them out. I started waving my hands in the general vicinity of the vending machines as I stuttered, the noises coming out of my mouth were garbled nonsense. Finally, after I took a deep breath, I was able to get out, "May I go to the vending machines?"
The teacher stares at me for a second before he sarcastically spits out garbled noises, "I- c- bl- Yes."
Everyone in class laughed.
I flush and dart out of the classroom. It isn't my fault I can't speak properly. And it isn't nice that they mocked me.
I have high functioning autism, which allows me to pass as a normal person most of the time.
But if you knew the signs...
There was no doubt that I wasn't normal.
I just wish people didn't pity or make fun of me because of it.
