CLAIRE'S POV

"C'mon Claire we don't want to be late", one of my best friends, Zara called. School had just finished and all I wanted was to be somewhere with my people. Was that so much to ask. I don't think so. "Do we have to go?", I whined as Vivian pulled me down the empty hallway. They suddenly stopped and stared at me as if I had a knife in my head. "What!? Do I have food on my face or something?!", I exclaimed immediately becoming self conscious. "Claire. Like are you serious?!? This is the most is important game of the entire season!!! Y'know as it's the final!!", Zara spoke frantically. "Yeah, I'm not stupid. But I still don't see why I have to go. And one of you please tell me if I have food on my face!", I stressed. "No you don't have food on your face. But honestly you can't be serious!!! Everyone is going to the game!!!", Vivian answered and began dragging me down the hall again. I sighed in realisation that there was no point in arguing as I was definitely not going to win. "Ohhh, don't act like you don't want to go. And we all know the reason why you really wanna go", Zara smirked. I didn't say anything because I knew exactly where the conversation was heading. "I'm going to see Brandon play center. Vivian is going because Matthew is playing as his school is against ours. Now let me think. Were you going to see the quarterback?? Y'know Owen what's-his-face", I could practically hear Zara's smirk. "Grady", I mumbled. "Cheer up, I'm just teasing. It's my job as one of your best friends especially when you have a major crush. It works both ways y'know you can tease us about our boyfriends", Zara grinned. I smiled back and shook my head at her. "I don't fancy Owen! Everyone knows Kayleigh has claimed him", I defended. "Oh pleaseee!!! If Owen was the least bit interested they would be dating!!", Zara exclaimed. "Claire y'know the quarterback doesn't always have to date the head cheerleader", Vivian backed Zara up. I quietly replied, "yeah" as we headed towards the east exit.

My friends were completely right. I did in fact have a small thing for the school's quarterback. Owen Grady. It was a very minor thing as I can't stand him 99 percent of the time. I only had a few subjects with him and he moved to my home room when we became sophomores. Which was a couple years ago. To be honest I don't actually like Owen, however Zara and Vivian just think I'm lying to myself. Owen is rude, arrogant and extremely cocky. But that doesn't stop all the girls drooling over him. Zara and Vivian actually think I have a chance with him. But seriously I don't even think Owen knows I exist. I always sit right at the back in the corners of all my classes so I don't have people staring me. Owen on the other hand always sits in the centre of the class. He loves the attention just as much as he loves himself. The worst part is every teacher falls for the act just because he is the school's star football player. To be fair there is something about him that makes you feel like you have to like him. And that just makes me so annoyed. "Claire! Stop dreaming about Owen and look out for Matthew. He's gonna be here soon", Vivian snapped me out of my daydream. "I..I wasn't", I stammered out shocked. My friends probably know me better than I know myself and that still surprises me. "Sureee", Zara said sarcastically. I huffed in annoyance and leant against the wall.

OWEN'S POV

"Hey! Quieten down! Save your energy for the game!!", Coach Bolton bellowed from his office into the locker room. "Sorry Coach, we're just trying to lighten the mood. Grady here is so tense", Barry called back in between laughs. Barry and Simon were whipping each with their towels. "What's the matter grumpy pants", Simon mocked. "He's just upset that he hasn't got a girl coming to watch him", Brandon added pinching my cheeks. "No it's not", I snapped. The locker room then echoed with a chorus of oohs which was followed with silence. "Then what's your problem, dude?", Brandon asked quietly. "Just...there'll be a lot of college scouts. I just don't want to mess up", I lied hoping no one would notice. "Dude! Trusts you would screw up!!", Brandon cried. "You're Hopwoods' finest quarterback, Grady number 36", Barry spoke into his deodorant can as if he was a commentator. "Thanks guys", I chuckled. I grabbed my towel out of my locker and headed to the showers. Brandon was right. There's this girl I like but I know she's not interested in me. The guys don't know who it is 'cause I'd never hear the end of it if they did know. Most girls in the school crush on me. I'm not being big headed. Honest. Ask anyone. But there is always the pressure for the quarterback to date head cheerleader. I hate it, I hate it so much. I can't stand Kayleigh and she is always flirting with me. She's horrible to anyone who doesn't do as she pleases. Most of the school is too blind to see that. Kayleigh also has guys drooling over her non-stop. I don't know why she can't just pick one, because me and her are one thing that is never going to happen. Don't get me wrong Kayleigh is pretty but she's nothing compared to the girl who sits in the corner of my maths, English and science classes. She's... "Yo, Owen! Get out the shower and stop fantasying about Kayleigh", Barry cut me out of my thoughts by shouting over the divider. "I don't even like Kayleigh, fxck off", I said jokingly as I turned off the shower.
