“Mackenzie!” A familiar voice shouts from downstairs. I mentally groan, burying my face deeper into my favorite blue, fuzzy pillow. I wasn’t ready to be woken up yet, I barely slept a wink the previous night.
“Mackenzie!” The voice calls again, yet louder if that’s even possible.
“Mother!” I shout back in the same tone, annoyance evident in my voice. She could be so persistent! “Mackenzie are you-” “I am awake, mother!” I yelled. By that point I could tell there was no way I’d be able to go back to sleep. I gradually rolled myself out of bed, trudging over to my closet and picking out a random outfit. I could feel my heart beating rapidly as I climbed into the shower, the hot water immediately relaxing my tense body as I began massaging soap onto my body. I’d been dreading this day for the past few months as it’s been all my mother talks about. College. Such a formal word. That definitely was not my scene. I was far from formal yet my mother seemed not to care. I knew she meant well, but she tended to be a control freak. She’d had this day planned out for as long as I could remember. The only good part seeming to come out of this whole ‘college’ thing was finally being set free from my mothers judgmental eye. She wasn’t always judgmental but she didn’t have a problem pointing out your flaws. That’s just how she was.
I quickly wash the coconut scented soap from my hair before climbing out and wrapping a towel around my body, Goosebumps rising on my skin as I stepped out of my warm environment. Honestly, I wasn’t nervous about leaving home. I loved adventures, and seeing new places.
“Macken-”
“Mother, stop calling me name I am right here” I sigh, padding down the staircase and into the kitchen. “I’m sorry sweetie, I’m just so excited for you” My mother gushed, pulling me in for a tight embrace. “Mom…” I groaned as she kissed my forehead.
My brother snickered from the table as he pretended to text on his cell phone. I turned to glare at him as he sent me an innocent smile. “Just wait, this’ll be you in three years” I pointed a finger at him as he rolled his eyes. “Oh sweetie, you couldn’t have chosen a better outfit for your first day?” My mother sighed, taking in my normal attire; skinny jeans, a nicely fitting t-shirt, and my normal black hightop converse sneakers.
“I like this outfit” I defended, running a hand through my hair as I grabbed an apple from the dish sitting on the counter. “Appearance isn’t everything, you know” I raised my eyebrows as she shook her head, clicking her tongue at me. “What am I going to do with you” She sighed, placing her hands on his hips.
“I’ll take your bags to the car” Dylan chuckled, kissing my cheek as he passed by. Sitting on the counter, I rest my head on the cabinet behind my head. It seemed my whole life was litterally just passing by. I honestly had no idea what to do anymore.

“Are we there yet?” I groaned, impatiently drumming my nails on the center-counsel as my mother drove. I had a major headache and going over potholes and bumps in the road wasn‘t making me feel any better. I was starting to hate this whole college thing even more. Two and a half ours in the car with my mother and brother was not an easy time. “Calm down, we‘re here“ My mother squealed, finally pulling into the parking lot and parking the car. “This place is huge!” My brother exclaimed from the backseat. Peering back at him I watched his hazel eyes grow wide as we pulled up to the campus. The place looked great, almost too great. I didn’t understand how I’d fit in here. Everything seemed so…perfect. The complete opposite of me. “Are you sure you can handle yourself here, Mack?” Dylan piped as we all climbed out of the car. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I rose an eyebrow. “Oh please, knowing you you’ll get lost within fifteen minutes” He smirked. With a roll of my eyes I flicked my brother in the forehead, grabbing my suitcase from the trunk and wheeling it behind me.
I hadn’t brought too much, just clothes and a few other necessities. Growing up I didn’t have the richest family, we got what we could afford but we managed. As we entered the large building people zoomed by lugging their bags along with them. An older lady with slightly graying hair gave me my dorm key and a pamphlet containing a map of the entire campus. “Looks like I wont get lost after all” I winked back at Dylan who just laughs.
“Okay so I’m in room D36...” I mumble, running a hand through my hair as we passed tons of students in the hallway who also seemed to be in search of their dorm rooms. After a few agonizing minutes of wandering, I finally found my room.
“Here it is” I sigh, turning to face my mother and brother. “Oh my gosh, you’re growing up so fast” My mother wailed. I smiled, hugging her tight. “I’m so proud. I love you so much, if you need anything you call right away” She cried, her grip tightening. I smiled at how much she cared. She didn’t always seem like it but I knew deep down I could always count on her. “I will. I love you mom” I pulled away, kissing her cheek before turning to my brother.
“Come ‘ere squirt” I laughed, wrapping my arms around him. He was only sixteen yet he already hovered over me. “I love you, Dylan” I sighed. “I love you too, Mack. Don’t forget to call every night, okay?” He pulled away, his face serious. Dylan and I were close, extremely. All my life he’s been the closest thing to a best friend.
“Of course.” I promised, kissing his cheek. “Bye sweetie. Call me as soon as your settled in” My mother smiled as they began down the hall. I waved sadly. It felt nice being on my own but a small part of me would miss my mothers over protectiveness. Sighing, I turned and slid the key into the newly white painted door.
The room is nice sized with two beds an a large desk. I noticed a few bags lying around on the floor already, soon noticing the girl standing on the closest bed to the door, struggling to hang up a large poster. “Oh, hello” She smiled, soon acknowledging my presence. I smiled, lugging my suitcase in as she hopped off of her bed to greet me. “I’m Erika” She smiled, running a hand through her waist length blonde hair, her blue eyes warm and inviting. “I’m Mack” I grinned. “Nice to meet you” She giggles, pulling me in for a hug. Slightly shocked by her sudden affection, I hug her back.
Things seemed to be going well, I was actually liking my new surroundings. Maybe things wouldn‘t be as back as I thought. I only prayed she didn’t turn out to be some secret psychopath.
