I like the smell of new stationery. Something about it makes me feel new again, like I have a fresh, clean slate to rewrite my life on.
Everybody has new books, pencils, pens, folders, erasers and the sorts on the first day. Their bags overflowing with objects to fill their new lockers with, arms carrying folders, books and freshly printed timetables that become crinkled in the frustrated hands of students. Everything is new. New things, new styles, new layouts, new people. It's all so new.
I stumble down the hall clumsily pushing past other students. Multitasking between breakfast and trying to find my new locker. I take one last bite of my apple, ripping away a piece of fruit with a crack. I near a bin, tossing the core as I walk past. "Excuse me!" A high pitched voice carries out a squeal forcing me to turn around. "This apple does NOT belong on the ground." A girl struts towards my abandoned core, laying lifeless on the ground. She bends down, wearing a pair of rubber gloves. She picks it up and drops it in the bin, the target that I missed. "Sorry, it was supposed to get in the bin." I start to turn around before she begins to speak again. "Well it obviously didn't get in the BIN, did it?" I walk towards her as she flips her long brown hair over her shoulder. Her petite figure is shadowed by mine as I reach her. A fake smile disguises my anger as I bend down slightly so I am at face level with the girl. She crosses her arms over her chest in arroggance, looking me dead in the eyes and raising her eyebrows at me. "Don't fuck with me." I spit in her face, narrowing my eyes and letting my smile slip away. I stand up straight and begin to leave again, but the girl just won't stop. "Slut." she mumbles, trying to disguise the insult under her breath. I freeze. The word echoes through my mind as if I'm being mentally punched in the face. I whip around, raising my voice at the bitch. "Say it again!" I yell in her face. I find a hint of fear in her eyes before they are coated again in chocolate confidence. "I said, slut." She leans towards me slightly as the words fall from her lips. I crack.
My books fall from my hands to the floor and in a second I have her up against the wall. Silence fills the room making me cringe. The girl whimpers slightly I'm guessing from the impact of the wall. I feel all eyes on us and out of the corner of my eye I notice a crowd beginning to clog the hallway, attracting more attention. "You're a bitch Freya." she chokes out. I'm ready to smack her but suddenly a strong arm wraps around my waist, flexing as it pulls me from her. "Let go of me." I huff before turning around. Beautiful green eyes gaze down at me through clear lenses, hair slicked back and clothes out of date. "U-um, I think you should stop." The boy stutters. I smile at him before turning to the girl who had already been washed over by relief, my smile once again fading. "Don't ever say that to me again. Ever." I almost whisper in her ear, my hot breath tickles her neck making her jolt. I gather my things from the ground as silence turns into the continuous hum of frustrated teenagers and make my way down the hall.
