Chapter 24

My eyes snapped open, and I quickly sat up sniffing the air. The smell could only mean one thing. Pancakes. I looked over at the clock that read, '8: 17am' Who the heck is up this early? That doesn't matter, it's pancakes.

I walked down stairs, sniffing the air as though my life depended on it. Technically it did, but that wasn't important right now. Pancakes, are important right now. My mouth was watering, at the thought of eating pancakes, covered in syrup. With a glass of milk, I was so excited.

I walked into the kitchen, and noticed mom setting a plate on the table, "Charlotte, there you are. I was just about to wake you up. Good morning." I waved my hand dismissively, in a way that I hoped said, 'good morning.' My eyes were locked with the plate of pancakes, and I felt like we were having a staring contest.

The pancakes won. I quickly sat down, and basically Inhaled the pancakes. Practically forgetting to chew. Mom look disgusted, and Robbie just smirked. Oh, Robbie was here. When did he get here? I continued eating the pancakes, not even questioning the fact that mom barely cooked pancakes unless she had to tell me something-

Wait a second....Did we run out of syrup? I thought grabbing the syrup bottle, staring at it with longing eyes. Sweet syrup, why did you have to go? So young. I shook my head, and hung my head. Robbie and mom stared at me as though I lost my mind. Mom cleared her throat,

"Sweetie, uh I have something to-"

"Oh yeah!" I said snapping my fingers, "There's that extra syrup bottle. In the pantry." I said getting up, and walking over to the pantry. Behind me, Mom and Robbie shared a quick glance. I rummaged through the pantry, and finally found the bottle. I did a little victory dance, and returned to the table. Mom poured a glass of milk, and set it beside me.

I gave her a grateful smile, not questioning the fact that mom was acting extremely nice today. I just happily munched on my pancakes, with a smile on my face. Mom's pancakes were just so good.

"Uh, sweetie?" Mom said, smiling at me. I looked up and smiled back. I took a sip of my milk, and set the glass down. I turned to mom,

"Yes?" I asked, taking a bite out of the last pancake I had. Mom moved a little in her seat, and fidgeted with her fingers. She looked nervous, I slowly lowered my fork, "Mom is everything okay?" I asked, noticing the tension in the room. What's going on?

Robbie looked tensed, and upset. Mom cleared her throat and nodding, giving me an obvious fake smile, "Of course, sweetie. Everything is fine." She said looking unsure herself, "I just have something to tell you." I dropped my fork, suddenly not hungry anymore.

The pancakes, were just a peace offering. Why didn't I think of this before? I was too distracted by the pancakes, that suddenly looked less appealing. Robbie cleared his throat and stood up,

"Well, I have to go poop. If you need me, I'll be...pooping." I raised my eyes, at Robbie's retreating figure. What in the world was that? And, that was too much information. Mom started moving around in her seat, and then she stood up. She walked towards the counter, and picked up a huge envelope I just noticed.

She walked back, and set the envelope in front of me. I looked down at the envelope in confusion, and looked back up at mom. She just gave me a small smile,

"Two days ago, I got that in the mail today. I looked at it, and noticed the return address was Colorado." My eyes grew, dad lived in Colorado. I looked back down the enveloped, and immediately hated it,

"I don't want it, you can throw it away mom. If its just another check, or a 'present'." I said using air quotes, "I don't want it. I don't want to take anything from him, anymore. I have no father." Mom scolded me,
