The Step
This man, and his shadow. The darkness of it
Shrouds my skin, a darker tan.
I look to the left, eyes away from the man.
To leave the blackness of despair
With this Step, I can.
Now, my strength, my success
Its abundance is rich
Just as the ground where my feet rest.
Where ever I go, it follows!
And I’ll prove it, with this Step.
I am shamed, I am darkened.
But, no weakness could be showed.
I am cast aside, with full strength inside
I stand my ground. I take my exile in pride.
I stand still at first, bones ever tense.
But, with this Step, I began my absence.
I am back, My world has changed!
These white men have told me
My old ways, are to be estranged!!
He says they won’t be in this new age.
And with his last Step, he feels my rage!!
