I awoke with a fright. I reached out for the invisible monster before me. My arm drooping to my side when I figured out the task was meaningless. There is no one here to interact with. I am by myself, and that's the way I like it. The moist chilling air drafted through the open window as the curtains gently swayed at either side of it. Leaning back on my pillow I take in the scene before me. Small room, crimson walls, black carpet, and small twin bed. Black trim followed the bottom of the 14 by 14 room. Darkness seemed impossible with amount of light breaking in through the window. Then there was a knock at the door. I leaned forward and swished my legs over the side of the bed. Stepping over a small pile of dirty cloths, I cautiously creaked the door open. A tall ,well built, black man stood in front of my door. The lights reflected off of his recently shaved head. His face remained neutral as he glanced into my room. Huffing in disappointment, he finally looked me in the eye.
"How many times do I have to warn you to close the window? It's the middle of winter and other people do not have the same body as you," the man said in an annoyed voice. I glanced down at my body and then back at him.
"Sorry, but it keeps the feeling at bay. It hurts less to be in the cold," I muttered back to him helplessly. He shook his head as he turned from my door and strode down the long hallway of closed doors. When I said I was alone I didn't really mean alone. There are many different kids here, but I have a room to myself because the others kept reporting my 'bad habit' to the officials. I gently close the door and twist around. I made my way to the small brown wooden dresser to pull out fresh cloths for the new day. An array of colors were lined up in my drawer. I scanned the colors carefully until I found the color I liked. I pulled out a sea-foam scoop neck shirt and threw on a black/grey striped zip jacket. Grabbing a pair of underwear and pants I walked out of the room to change in the bathroom. I made my way down the tan hallway to the single bathroom. Opening the door I read that it was my turn to take a shower. I frantically jump in the shower and then get dressed. I head downstairs and make my way to the long rectangular dinning room table. Twenty other people sat there already, but you can tell that they have not been there long. Breakfast was on its way by the looks of it. Quietly, I pulled out the fragile wooden chair and sat down. The mixture of exotic hair colors and body types infiltrated my brain. Conversation erupted throughout the large dinning room.
My finger twitch as I gaze at the fruit bowl. The room temperature is to high for me. I feel my body heating up. I look around the room and find the thermostat. Striding over to it, I quickly turn the nozzle down to a cooler temperature. Annoyed sighs ring out through the room. My heartbeat quickens and my finger twitch.
"Do you really want me to accidentally set the table on fire?! Come on people!" I yell, thrusting my upwards facing palms towards them. My breathe comes out in short puffs filled with tiny sparks. I can feel my body burning. I turn to the door and place my hand on the door as I grab the handle. When I go to leave I see the dark hand print on the door. Crap. I run down the hallway, past the gym, and into the open pool area. I frantically catch my breathe when I see the small flame flicker out of my mouth. I was getting way to close to starting a fire. I had to cool off fast or my body will start to create a fire. Without taking my cloths off, I jump into the water. My skin aches from the pain. I let out a horrifying whimper as it puts out the burning. Dunking under water, I pull my sleeves up and start to scrub at my skin. Ashes break from my skin and float in the water. I watch the flakes of my burned skin twirl through the pool. It was surprising that something that came from me could look so peaceful. My body relaxes and I start to let my body float. God, this really needs to stop. Standing up, I make me way over to the side of the pool and pull my chest over the side. Bringing my body over, I realize the figure standing near the towel area. A boy was standing next to a designated tour giver. All the new misfits are given the guide before being left here for good. The boy makes his way over to me and puts his delicate hand on my shoulder.
"Hey, are you okay?" the boy questions me in a soft voice. Startled, I shove my shoulder forward so his hand falls off.
"Sorry, but you really don't want to touch me. I'm not really stable if you know what I mean," I snap at him. Brushing past him, I slowly make my way towards my room. When I finally make it back I lock my door and close the window. Slumping onto my bed, I touch my bone chillingly cold skin. I pull up my sleeves and look at my forearms. They looked deathly pale skin and snickered. How could this cold body burn people? I close my eyes at the thought. Silence. This is what I need right now. Turning over in the bed, I ignored that I was soaking the sheets and tried to fall asleep. As I start to drift off I thought of the boy at the pool. I have to stay away from him as long as possible. I don't want to hurt anyone else.
