"Dude, this job sucks ass", Ian protested, throwing his head back and looking at his best mate, while they walked in the direction of a walk-in freezer. They were both carrying pretty big boxes containing whoever knows what, which just made Ian sigh and complain.
Anthony had been wanting to buy a car for forever, so he decided that if he wanted it, maybe he should have to work for it. So that’s what he did. The boy got a job as an assistant in a butcher shop. He didn't really need work experience or any kind of special knowledge at all for this, so he was accepted immediately. But when he mentioned this to Ian, both boys sitting on a bench in the park after school, he frowned and looked at him.
"Of every place in this town you could work at, you decided to work in-…?"
"Hey, it was the only place they accepted me in. Plus, I'll be out of there as soon as I get my money", he cut his friend off.
There was a moment of silence, the only sounds being the loud children playing in the playground and the birds on top of the tree next to them. And then Ian shrugged and a smile made its way to his lips.
"Well, I still want to buy an Xbox, so…"
Anthony blinked at him. What did that have to do with his new job?
"What does that mean?"
"That I'm working with you, dumbass," he shot a grin at him.
The older boy smiled back at him, because even though Ian had been telling him about how much he wanted an Xbox for almost four months now, he also knew his friend hated it when Anthony did something he didn't like alone, and always offered to do it with him.
"Do you even know if they need more people?", he murmured, still smiling at him.
"Relax, they'll give me the job as soon as they see me."
Ian winked at him and they both chuckled. And that was it: they were both going to do some shitty work with their best friend by their side. But as soon as they got out of there, they'd both have the money to buy what wanted, so at least it'd all be worth it.
"I never forced you into this, you know," Anthony rolled his eyes at him, his voice showing how tired he was.
It had been a busy day. Well, as busy as an assistant could get. They carried boxes from one place to another, cheked stuff and helped the other workers in there. Neither of them still understood why they had so many boxes, but when they asked their boss and he told them it was just "meat and stuff" they both shrugged and kept working.
Now it was almost time for the place to close, so Anthony was slightly relieved. He just wanted to go home, eat pizza and play video games until one in the morning, considering that Ian would probably stay the night. Like every single Friday night, to be honest.
"I know, but this still sucks", he huffed.
As they continued to make their way to the freezer, they saw their boss giving someone the keys of the place as he told them to close the shop that night, and some of their co-workers already leaving. They waved them goodbye as they got out, shooting them a grin. Anthony and Ian only politely smiled at them and nodded, trying to be as nice as possible. People in here treated them really well even though they were new and probably eight years younger than most, so they appreciated it.
Anthony left a box on the floor in order to get the door of the walk-in freezer open, Ian just transferring his weight from one foot to another. When he finally unlocked it, they both got in and shut it close. It was really chilly in there, but they learned that if they got out fast they didn't get too cold.
The pair left the boxes in a corner next to a shelving, checking they were all sealed. When they were almost finished checking them and after some severe minutes of being there, Anthony saw Ian shiver out of the corner of his eyes. He pushed the younger boy to the door, telling him to go out to get his things since they already have to leave and that he would catch up in a second. Ian flashed him a smile as he shivered again and made his way to the door.
But fifteen seconds later, with a confussed expression and shaking hands, Ian showed up in front of Anthony again, who had just finished.
"Du-dude?"
"Yes?", Anthony raised an eyebrow.
"I can't open the door", he said with big eyes and the same expression as before.
He could have been kidding. Ian always made those kind of jokes, acting to make people belive he was in trouble when he actually wasn't and stuff like that.
But the panic his voice told Anthony he wasn't.
