"No you can't do this to this family, I won't allow you to rip this family apart!" I scream. My 21 year old, 6 brother, Kyle wanted to join the army. Now I would've been proud of him and supported him, but a few years back our parents did the same thing. They both died. My dad stepped on a mine field and was blown to bits while my mom was shot down. My dad joined the army and my mom joined the air force. My brother and I were forced into the custody of our gradparents. They are fairly old and may not be on this Earth for much longer and we'll loose them. Now my brother wanted to join the army to avenge our parents and serve for the greater good.

"Kara I have to. Don't you understand. I'd rather fight for this family then do nothing, but feel sorry for ourselves.!" Kyle retaliated. Kyle had called us all into the main room o he could tell us about his plans. My grandparents were crying and I was balling. I was heartbroken. Everything good in my life was suddenly falling apart. He stood up and hugged our grandparents. Then he turned to me. I hugged him for what seemed like forever. I thought that if I hugged him long enough he wouldn't leave. He pryed me off him and said to me, "I'll be back before you know it. He took all his packed belongings and walked out the door leaving me helpless on the floor crying.

My grandparents called me over for dinner a couple hours later, but I wasn't hungry. I stayed either behind the couch or locked in my room. I was never thirsty. I was never hungry. I wanted to be alone. I wanted Kyle to come back. It was supposed to be a great year, but now I wasn't so sure.

"School is starting tomorrow. I have all your school supplies ready." My grandma said. She set my backpack down at the door to my room.

"That's great." I reply. She and grandpa had gotten over what had happened last month. I didn't. Every letter he sent to us I read and kept. I wrote back to him, but I didn't feel any better.

"Try to make some friends tomorrow." My grandpa said.

"I'll try." I said. That made him smile. He set down a plate of chicken by my door. I ate a couple pieces, but that was it. I closed my eyes wishing Kyle was in the bunk above me.
