A smile spread across my face as I watch the humans below. Giggles of laughter echoed from playgrounds and the peaceful sound of bird song flitted through the sky before it reached my perch among the clouds. The warm summer breeze played with the frayed ends of my silky blue dress. Making it dance in rhythm with the world around me. I dangled my feet over the cloud's wispy edges, letting them swing along with the breeze. A soft hum serenity escaped my lips. For hours at a time I would sit here and watch over the families that ran just below me. The first day was a thrill. Watching the small creatures dart along the grassy plains, a hop in their step. The day after, nothing changed. I would just lay up above and watch them with interest. The day after that, I could sing the familiar songs that played on the radio of passing cars. Knowing each one by heart. By the next week it was the just the routine . Get up, make morning light for the humans, watch them, then shut off the light. No big deal. Now the days seem to drag. As if one hour was an eternity and each day was a life time. The same songs played from the same cars. The same kids went to the same school each week. Nothing ever changed. Everything remained the same. I sighed to myself before positioning my body in an upward position, ready to create what the humans call sunset.A bright painting of pinks and oranges covered the sky, giving a warm tint to the world below. Families were circled around dinner tables finishing their evening meal. Birds hunkered down into their nests ready to meet the dark loneliness of night. Then there was me. Alone waiting for the humans to wake up again. All I could do for now was display my works of vivid color and wonder across the sky before it fades to deep blues and purples. I showed one last strike of color before I let it end. One by one the lights went out in the tiny homes below until only a few remained, leaving me alone to wait for the next day.
"Hello?" A voice called from above me, yanking me from my thoughts. I frantically searched around me for the voice, but I was only surrounded by the shadows.
"Hello?" I replied, still searching for the person.
"Up here." They called back. I looked above me and locked eyes with a small girl. Her slightly rounded face framed here silvery blue eyes. Her night, black long hair flowed over her shoulders like a waterfall.
"Who are you?" I asked the girl above me. She appeared much younger than me.
"Clair de lune." She squeaked with a slight smile. "What's your name?"
"Terre." I answered. "Mind if I call you Clair?" I asked as the small child made her way towards me, using the stars like stepping stones.
"Sure!" Clair said with a grin. She walked to the edge of the cloud and rested beside me. We sat side by side looking at the world under us in silence.
"So this is what it's like to watch humans?" Clair said to herself. "It's wonderful." She breathed and leaned over the edge to get a better look at the humans."where have they all gone?" She asked, her head slightly cocked to one side.
"They are all sleeping. Getting rest for the day ahead."
"Why don't we sleep?"
"Because we must watch them. They need our protection."
"Why?" Clair's tiny voice asked.
"Because that is how our life must go. We sit and watch over the humans for everyday of our lives until we pass on."
"Then what?"
"Well, our bodies will float down to the surface of the civilization below and become one with the Earth. It's like Earth gives you a big hug of thanks before letting you sleep forever underneath the hills and mountains ."
"Then who will be here. Up on this cloud?"
I laugh to myself."well, we will get to that one day,but you are still pretty young. You still have a few thousand years ahead of you." Clair let out a soft giggle and leaned her head against my shoulder. I gently brushed the small girl's hair with my fingers, letting the silky strands twist around my hand before falling back into place.
"Hey Clair?" I asked, but only got a soft snore in reply. I smiled to myself before pulling a cloud over her small body to protect it from the night air. She had a soft smile on her face. When she woke up I had already started the morning lights for the humans. Pinks and golds filled the world around me as I finger painted the worlds morning masterpiece.
A small squeaked followed by a yawn came from behind me.
"Good morning Clair." I chirped with a smile. "Sleep well?" I received a soft nod of her head as she rubbed her sleepy eyes.
"What are you doing?" She asked me, a slight whine in her voice.
"Making the sunrise." I reply.
"Can I try?" She questioned, but before I could answer she had already started, except the colors were no longer bright and joyful, but dark and shadowy. Instead of clouds stars began to appear.
"Clair!" I warned, pulled her hands from the sky and began recoloring the sunrise with its traditional colors.
"I'm-I'm sorry." She stuttered. " I thought I could help." Her eyes began in to brim with tears. I sighed and turned to the little crying girl.
"I know you meant well," I cooed."but this is my job. I know how it works so please let me do it myself." She sniffed and nodded her head, not looking me in the eyes.
"Hey." I nudged her shoulder playfully earning a slight giggle in response. " Come back later?" I asked with a smile. She nodded and returned to her spot in the sky far, far above me. I looked up and saw a faint outline of a full moon around her. Day after day we would meet up and sit among the stars. Sharing stories of our adventures and sights we've seen. Though one thing caught my eye. The silhouette of the moon around Clair seemed to fade with each passing day and so did her energy. Every time I met her she seemed farther and farther away.
"Hey Claire?" I asked.
"Hm." She mumbled, her head rested in my lap as I gently played with her hair.
"What is that moon thing that is around you all the time?"
Her breath slightly hitched and her small figure tensed up. She then let out a small sigh and hugged me close.
"It's nothing." She whispered. I doubted it was "nothing",but the topic seemed to upset her so I dropped it. We just continued to watch over the world in silence.
The next night Clair seemed slower, more conserved than her usual snuggly, giggly self. After she finished creating the beautiful night sky we sat under she shuffled over to my cloud and sat by me. Not saying a word.
"Terre." She said to break the silence that was setting around us. "Are we friends?" Her question took me back a bit,but I gave her a reassuring smile.
"Of course we are." I replied giving her a playful nudge on the shoulder, but she didn't respond. She just continued to look down at the tiny cities below us with a blank stare.
"Terre." She mumbled.
"Yes Clair?"
"What if I went away?" Her questions were starting to scare me now.
"What do you mean away? Are you going to watch over another planet?"
"Something like that." She mumbled.
"Well, I'd be sad. I'd miss you very much, but I don't want to keep you here if you feel like it's forced." She just nodded silently like she was letting this new information soak in.
"Clair? Are you ok?" After a few moments of silence Clair lets out a sigh.
"The moon represents my life cycle. As the moon changes its phase I start to die." She explained between small sobs. Clair pulled her knees into her chest and shook in fear.
"I don't want to go!" She cried. Rivers of her tears spilled over the clouds and onto the humans below causing the tiny streets of the world below to be consumed in an ocean of water.
"Clair." I whispered kindly and pulled her into a hug. Her breathing slowed to a normal breath, but she continued to cling to me as if I was to fade away at any moment. We sat like this. Not moving. Not caring for anything except the person we were clinging to. Finally, she lifted her small head up to reveal a slight grin.
"Thank you." She whispered as one more faint tear traced her cheek." Where I am, I'm alone. There isn't any humans or people like us. Just me and the stars above." She backed away from me enough that we were sitting side by side, but our shoulders still touched."when I started I was so excited to be there. Looking at the planet below me dancing around it like there was no tomorrow. Then, all all the excitement just left. Like a shaken bottle of soda. You open it and all the excitement comes out at once. Once that's gone it's just." She let out a sigh and gazed at the tiny lights that emanated from a select few of the humans' homes. "But everything has its time. Everything lives and everything welcomes death with open arms." She stood up,flattened out her dress, and let out a small huff before turning to me." And everyone has the chance to dance among the stars." She gave me a kind, familiar smile. She then turned away from me and climbed up to her normal perch using the night sky's stars as stair steps."Goodbye Terre." Clair giggled to herself and the turned away from me. A single tear dripping from her rosy cheeks. Suddenly, she began to twirl. Her soft delicate dress matched the design of the universe that surrounded her as she bounded from star to star. Never faltering and never without a smile. Her petite figure danced among the shadows of night and the beautiful glow of the stars while humming a familiar tune.
"Blue lips. Blue veins, blue. The color of our planet from far far away." She began to sing. I smiled through my tears and joined in. Our voices intertwined in perfect harmony as Clair's soft movements spun around me. In a moment of pure bliss I wanted to go up to dance alongside her. I lifted myself from my position in the clouds and she froze. Looking me straight in the eyes the whispered.
"Blue." And faded into a curtain of stars with that single word echoing in the emptiness around me. I was back to where I started.Alone and afraid. The light of the soft glowing sun shined through my tears as they fell upon the earth, covering the world below in my sorrow. The humans that squirmed below where no longer the ones I had enjoyed watching with Clair. Their very existence burned a fire in my soul that I never knew I had.
"Ungrateful worms." I growled and tightens my hand into a fist.
" How dare they smile and be happy on a day where I've lost so much." Shocks of electricity shot through me before hurdling toward the city below. The peaceful, puffs of cotton that surrounded me contorted and turned a deadly grey. A world shattering shriek erupted from my core causing the human's peaceful homes below to shake against my anger. I tensely combed my hands through my slightly frizzed hair before collapsing. Shrieks could be heard from the people of Earth. Pain, fear, sadness. All of these emotions laced into the cries of the creatures that laid just below me. With every cry it broke through my barrier of fire and grief.
"Oh no." I whispered to myself, still curled up in my huddled position. I raised my head and met the golden glow of the burning buildings below. Tiny screams for help enveloped the world around me. My tears gushed from my firey eyes quenching the curtain of fire that blazed below.
"I'm so sorry." I breathed."I'm so sorry." I was just mumbling to myself, but at this point I didn't care. I was alone. Again. No one could help me.
"Hello?" A voice called from above me. I looked up and locked eyes with a small boy. The boy was accompanied by a soft silhouette of a moon. A kind smile fought through my tears.
"Hello." I replied.((Hello readers! I hope you liked this. I know it's short, but I decided I'd change things up a bit. I'm also looking for willing artists to help create art for this. I would love to see what you guys see the characters as. Thanks a lot guys!))
