CHAPTER ONE
"Innocence only lasts for so long until it's either surrendered or stolen."
There was a boiling rage deep inside of her begging for release. She was a lady, well-bred, but she desired to give Evan Wilson the talking-to that she desperately wanted, nay needed, to do. He'd surely had his say in the matter that happened between them and it didn't seem right that her side of the story could not be heard when he had shamed her so openly in society. The memories from that life-changing night began to sweep into the inner recesses of her brain, forcing her to re-live those moments.
"All this dancing has left me feeling quite hot. I do believe I would like take in some fresh air outside in the garden. Shall you join me Miss McKinley?"
Her heart beat rapidly; Just dancing with him had made her giddy with happiness and now he wanted some private time with her? Surely he felt the same for her and she did him! His icy blue eyes stared deeply into her own. She wanted nothing more than to melt into his strong arms. There was such a confidence about him that attracted her to him even more.
She knew full well that respectable young ladies would never dare to venture into the gardens alone at night without a chaperone, with a man nonetheless, but Jillian had become so mesmerized by Evan that she nodded her head in agreement.
From the very moment they had met many weeks ago, there was an undeniable chemistry. He was the most handsome man she had ever laid eyes on and was wealthy to boot! Not that his wealth mattered to her. She was wealthy herself. Jillian could tell from the way he looked at her that he was just as attracted her as she was to him. He could possibly be her future husband! The thought made her tremble slightly and she couldn't help but smile as her cheeks burned hot from the thought of that. Evan took hold of her gloved hand and led her outside into the cooler night air. It felt so refreshing.
"What if we are seen?" she whispered, feeling slightly anxious and yet... exhilarated.
There was no mistaking the glint in his eyes as a wicked smile spread across his face Whenever he smiled, two dimples showed on each of his cheeks which was irresistible to her. His smile was so addictive; It alone could charm just about anyone, herself included. She felt a sense of honor that he had single-handedly chosen her out of the many other beauties at the ball to take a stroll in the garden with.
"So what if we are my darling gal? One day soon you shall be my wife Jillian. It is perfectly acceptable for a couple such as ourselves to take a stroll in the gardens."
Oh my! He does feel the same affections as I do for him! I have never felt happier than I do in this moment!
She smiled up at him like a love-sick girl even though she was a fully-blossomed woman of seventeen years. Shock and surprise over his mention of marriage made her speechless... but only for a moment.
