The light caused my eyes to flutter open, as I groaned and stretched my arms. I looked around, suddenly realizing I was in the comfort of my own bed. As I scratched my head, the events came flooding back to my mind.
Whoa. Crazy dream.
Rubbing my eyes, I sat up in my bed and looked around, waiting for the fogginess of sleep to rub off. I sighed as I stumbled out of bed, stretching on the way over to my bathroom. The harsh, sudden light made me flinch as I turned on the bathroom light, looking at myself in the mirror.
What I expected was my normal, average, tired-looking and blackhead stricken face. Instead, what I saw shocked me. My skin was perfectly clear, emerald eyes bright and colorful, under-eye circles gone.
“I must be dreaming again.” I mumbled to myself, pinching my face, and nearly jumping out of my pajamas when nothing happened. This was… real…? “Okay, well I guess it’s just a good day for me?” But that was impossible. I never had good days.
Curious, I touched my flaming copper hair and was surprised by silky softness instead of coarse and slightly dirty. Strangely, it was a perfect mix of wavy and curly, with no frizz. And I had just gotten out of bed.
“Maybe I’m seeing things wrong.” I grumbled, reaching for my thick-framed glasses on the counter and slipping them on. It covered my vision, making everything blurry. My nose crinkled in curiosity, and I took them off. Everything turned crisp, clear and colorful once more. Back on they went, with the same result. I flicked them off their perched place on my nose, and once more it happened.
“WHAT THE HECK I’M NOT SPIDER-MAN!!!” I screamed at my reflection, furious with my unanswered curiosity. “Vision cannot be restored over-night that is physically and scientifically impossible.” I whispered to myself, suddenly feeling even more like a freak of nature.
“Whatever.” I scoffed at my glasses, tossing them into the sink. Stomping into my bedroom, I huffed and collapsed onto my bed. This was so frustrating.
The door swung open, and in came my mom.
“Sweetie, just to let you know, I’ve got chocolate chip pancakes ready downstairs.” She chirped, watching me as I sat up in bed once more, my face turning bright red, silently hoping she hadn’t heard my screaming fit. Ultimately, I now felt like a spoiled freak of nature. She cocked her head to the side, perfect blonde hair swaying with it.
“Have you done something to your face, honey bunny?” That’s what I love about my mom. True, real, nothing held back. “Did you… put on makeup?” Her aquamarine eyes brightened at the thought.
“No, I don’t know.” I sighed, her curious expression not helping my feelings whatsoever.
“Oh yes, and if you’re wondering how you got home, a boy dropped you off.” She smiled menacingly, “He was very handsome. Do you have something you haven’t been telling me?” Perfectly shaped eyebrows up in anticipation, I shook my head.
“No, mom.” Suddenly, everything hit me like a freight train. This meant that the dream last night was real? It wasn’t a dream? Whatever, maybe I didn’t have enough water and just passed out.
“Well, he said you had a nasty mix-up with a door separator and blacked out, just like that.” Mom shook her head, laughing melodically. “Just like you, Jocey. And before I leave, your audition is at 2:00 sharp!” With that, the door slammed shut behind her and I was left to my thoughts.
