I've always lived in my brother's shadow. Which I can typically live with, except when his "fame and popularity" effect me directly. Like making me late to orientation because he had to stop and flirt with the girl in front of us at Starbucks. "Excuse me we have some place to be." I tell the blonde tan college Barbie in front of me interrupting their invigorating conversation about how big his muscles are.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you there are you his girlfriend?" she asked me giving me the evil eye, while I almost threw up in my mouth.
"No I'm his ego management also known as his sister, aka girl who's about to be late," I turned to my brother, "chance say good bye to wannabe Barbie so we can go." I said.
"Right sorry, babe I'll see you around." He said walking away with out a second look
"Do you want me number?" the girl asked looking after him, I followed be hind chance,
"you know you could have at least answered her." I said
"I could of but either way should would have got hurt so its better this way. "he said, as he started the car and headed toward campus. My brother the love 'em and leave 'em king of Texas very one.
--------
Don't get me wrong I love my brother, were extremely close. But my whole life all I've ever been is Chance Maverick's little sister and that was perfectly fine back home in our small town outside of Dallas. But this was college, I was supposed to figure out my self here, be my own person, but my brother wasn't about to happen. As much as I love the kid he's more protective then my football coach father. Which is saying something. As you can tell from the Starbucks incident, my brother is somewhat of a man-whore, but that doesn't stop him from protecting me from all guys. I wasn't even able to date back home because all the boys were afraid of either my dad, or my brother. But that was going to change, come hell or high water.
--------
After orientation chance picked me up and we went to get some dinner, since our parents ditched us to go to diner with old friends. "what are you in the mood for?" chance asked taking the ramp onto the high way
"burger." I said scrolling through twitter
"I think I can do that." He said turning the volume up on the country station that was playing. 15 minutes later we were pulling in to a diner. We walked in and were told to pick a booth, as we picked a table I couldn't help but notice the help wanted sign above the counter. We spent a few minutes going over the menu and gave the waitress our food and drink order. "so are you excited for tomorrow? Move in day that exciting, do you know who your roommate is yet?"
"Yeah, I'm so pumped, college freedom here I come. Plus, I'm sure you're ready to get my stuff out of your apartment. Tell Daniel I said thank you for letting me stuff infiltrate y'all's apartment, I'll come over and make y'all something yummy once I get settled." Since freshmen are the last to move onto campus, I had orientation before move in and so my stuff had been taking up residence in Chance and his best friend and teammate, Daniel's apartment, as payment I promised to keep them stocked with yummy things all season long.
"I'll let him know, and not too much freedom right?" he said as our drinks were set down in front of us
"Chance, I'm 18 years old, soon to be 19, and I've never been on a date or to an actual party since middle school. I'd say its high time I started having some fun."
"not too much fun though you still have to get good grades,"
"And I will, look lets make a deal, if at anytime me having fun becomes a hindrance to my grades or myself, you can step in and be your over protective self, but only if and when that happens. Other then that I need you to promise me you'll let me put myself out there, I need you to promise me you'll step back, you're my brother and I love you, but you need to let me figure it out for my self." I said look at him, I can tell he's having a hard time with what I just said, at the same time our waitress puts our food down in front of us and asks if we need anything else. We say no and I look back at my brother "fine, I Chance Maverick, promise to ease up on over protective brother mode, unless I deem something to be hurting you or your grades." I smiled and said "Shake on it." At this moment I didn't realize just how hard I would make it for him to not keep his promise to me.
