"I'm sorry for the shock, but it was just a power failure." The nurse assured us. I squeezed Esther's hand comfortingly. "We will soon have a generator running." she gave us a smile and walked out, Esther letting out a sigh of relief."Thank goodness it wasn't something serious." she said, absently rubbing her thumb over my knuckles. I smiled.
"Yep." But then I remembered the police officer who had been acting funny. I furrowed my brows together and thought hard. Esther snapped her fingers in front of my face.
"Earth to Raymond! Hey, you okay?" she settled herself among her pillows as I answered.
"Well...lately there's been this weird guy..." I looked up. "Maybe I shouldn't tell you." I was met with protests.
"You can tell me!" Esther cried. She stuck out her lower lip and made a puppy-face at me. I grinned.
"Fine." I laced my fingers through her's and took a deep breath. "Okay. A few weeks ago, a policeman came to my family's house. He acted really weird, saying strange things and stuff..." I thought a minute, but couldn't quite remember what he had told me. I continued. "Anyway, before me and my..." I stopped, and swallowed back a lump that had formed in my throat. Esther rubbed my hand.
"I understand, Ray." she whispered. Her eye's glistened with tears. "I lost my brother." She tried to swipe a stray tear away, but I reached out and wiped it with my thumb. I felt tears start running down my own cheeks.
"No one's called me Ray since my dad...went a little over the edge..." I tried to make it a joke, and failed. Esther gave a weak smile. I cupped her face in my hands. "It'll be okay. We'll make it." I then added, "My Nothing Girl." I smiled, my eyes watering. Esther grinned back.
"God will see us through." she whispered. I nodded. "I still want to become a Christian, though." I nodded.
"Okay." I held her hands. "Just pray, confess your sins and say that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Son of God, and that you want Jesus to come and live in your heart." I said. Esther nodded.
"Okay."
