Chapter 1: Ohio
Jordan's POV
"You're going to do great!" My dad said as we sat in the car in front of the school. My new school. I nodded and tugged on the handle, pushing the car door open and stepping out. "Are you sure you don't need me to come in with you?"
"I'm fine." I said, grabbing my bag and slinging one strap onto my shoulder.
"You don't need an inter-"
"-Dad, I'm fine."
"Okay, okay. Have a good day at school." He said with a smile.
"Thanks." I said, slamming the car door closed and walking closer to the school. I opened the door and walked in, looking around a bit before finding the office. I walked in and walked up to the front desk.
"Can I help you?" The woman sat behind the desk asked.
"I'm new." I said.
"What's your name?"
"Jordan Roberts." I said. She typed my named into the computer and clicked on a few things.
"Eleventh grade?" She asked.
"Yeah." She clicked a few more things and then the printer roared to life. It spat out a few papers and she picked them up, stapling them and showing them to me.
"Here's your schedule, it has your locker combination and your lunch on it. This is a map of the school and the back page is the bell schedule. Follow me and I'll get your student ID made. The first one is free, but every ID after that costs $3, so try not to lose it. You will use this ID to check out library books, text books, and buy school lunch." She said as she led me through the winding hallways of the office. I don't know how people don't get lost in here. We came to a room where a white sheet was set up in front of a camera, computer and a printer.
"Go ahead and sit in front of the sheet." She said, pointing to the chair that was in between the sheet and the camera. I walked over and sat down, smiling as she snapped my picture. She typed a few things and then printed out my ID. She grabbed it and handed it to me. It was white, but all the letters were in red. It had the name of the school, my name, my grade, my ID number and my picture. In the bottom left corner was a little cartoon bulldog.
"There's someone waiting in the book room for you so just go there and get your textbooks and then head to your first class. Have a great day, welcome to Ridgemond High and go bulldogs!" She said with a fake enthusiasm in her voice, leading me out of the office.
I flipped to my map and found the book room, following the map down a few halls until I found it. I walked in to see a man sitting behind a computer.
"Are you Jordan?" He asked and I nodded. "Hand me your schedule please." He said. I handed it to him and he looked it over before standing up and disappearing into the stacks of books. He came back with three books and placed them on the counter. "Let me see your ID." I handed it to him and he scanned it, scanning the books as well and then sliding them over to me.
"Welcome to Ridgemond." He smiled. I grabbed the books and luckily, my locker was just down the hall so I walked until I found my locker. I put everything on the ground and put in my combination, popping it open. I picked up my books, slid them into my locker and slammed it shut.
I looked at my schedule and noticed I had art first period. I found the room and walked in, handing my schedule to the teacher since I was about ten minutes late.
"Welcome." She smiled, giving my schedule back to me. "Go find an empty seat." I picked the only empty seat in the front and sat down. The teacher started telling the class what to do while I sat there, lost. After she turned the class loose, she walked over to me and started asking me questions about art at my old school and explained that the student had just started a new project. She handed me the instructions and told me to ask her if I had any questions before returning to her desk.
***
I was in my fifth period, Algebra, and the teacher had just finished notes and we were just working on our homework. The teacher told me to try the homework but she didn't expect me to get it done.
I stood up to ask her a question but got very dizzy halfway to her desk. The room started to spin and I grabbed onto a random student's desk, feeling my knees become weak, drawing attention to myself. Everyone surrounded me, yelling things at me, but I couldn't hear them.
"STOP!" I yelled, or at least I think I did. I don't know, I couldn't hear. I made eye contact with the teacher and took a deep breath. "Can I go to the nurse?" I asked as slowly and as clearly as I possibly could.
"Of course." She said and then turned her head and said something. The students surrounding me went back to their desks and a girl walked up to me, grabbing onto me so I wouldn't fall. She led me down the hallway and I hope she wasn't talking because I couldn't hear her to respond. We made it to the nurse's office and she sat me down on the bed that was in there.
"Do you need me to stay?" She asked and I shook my head no. She smiled and then left, just as the nurse walked in. She started talking but she was speaking so fast I couldn't understand her. I held up my hand and she stopped talking.
"I can't hear at the moment." I said and her eyes widened. "Can you please just call my parents? My name is Jordan Roberts." She nodded and sat down at her desk, looking in the computer for my dad's number. I sat on the bed, gripping it, hating this feeling. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it sucks. Halfway through her phone call, my hearing returned and the room stopped spinning.
"Alright, thank you." She said and hung up, moving back over to me.
"Your parents are on the way." She said.
"Thank you." I said. "Can I lie down? "
"Of course, do you need me to get someone to get your stuff for you?"
"Yes please."
"Okay, whose class were you in?" I was about to answer when the same girl who helped me to the nurse's office walked in.
"I just brought her stuff for her." She said, placing it at my feet and leaving. I laid down for fifteen minutes, the nurse getting a call that my dad was here. I stood up slowly as to not have the dizzy feeling return and grabbed my stuff, walking down to the office where my dad was standing.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I just had another episode. Let's go home." I said.
