"Levy!" my dad shouts from the car.
"Yeah, Dad?" I shout back
"Good luck today, I know you'll do great." he says, and then he's gone, leaving me alone, in front of Edgewater High School. Today is my first day here as a freshman, and I'm terrified, but then I see my twin brothers, Kyle and Jason walking towards me, and I instantly feel calm. It would have been nice if they would have let me ride with them in their car, but apparently they're "too cool" to have their baby sister ride with them.
"Are you ready for this? says Kyle, sensing my anxiousness.
"Not really." I reply, and they both laugh."Stop laughing at me," I say, and even I can hear the aggravation in my voice. Sensing the seriousness in my tone, they both stop laughing and Jason puts his arm around me.
"Stop worrying Lev, I know you'll be fine, just find one of us if you get lost or you feel like you need us." Easy for them to say, they're seventeen, and are just starting their senior year here.
"Okay, I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be." I say as I smooth over my long, red ponytail. And then we walk inside.
I've never seen anything like it. There are students all around me, carrying books and talking and laughing and hugging. I've never seen so many students in one place before. To be honest, it scares me a little. How can a short little redhead like me, survive in this giant school?
My face must have paled, because Kyle squeezed my hand and said "you'll be fine, let's go find your locker, and then I'll take you to your first class."
After we find my locker, Kyle takes me to my first class, English, and we stop outside the door.
"Ok after your first period, try to find your way to your next class, and if you get lost come find me or Jason, and we'll take you."
"Thanks Kyle, I'm really glad you guys here."
"Of course, oh, and if anybody tries to sell you an elevator pass, don't take it. Love you!" Then he's gone and I am alone.
I walk in, and take a seat in the middle row, between two girls, one a beautiful blonde with green eyes, and the other a pretty girl with brown hair and eyes.
"Hello class, I'm Mr. Jackson, now let's take attendance, and then we'll begin." he starts calling names. I don't really pay attention until he says "Levy Kingsley?"
"Here." I reply, keeping my head down.
"Levy Kingsley?" he says again.
"Here." I say again, louder this time.
"Speak up next time, please." he says, and then continues with roll call.
How embarrassing was that! The rest of class passes in a blur, and before I know it, class is over. I go through my next few classes like a zombie, there but not really there. I get the notes and go through the motions of class, but it doesn't feel like me, like an out of body experience. Then comes my savior. Art class.
I've always loved art. It got me through everything. When my mom passed away in a tragic car accident last year, I would draw in my sketchbook every chance I got. When I didn't have to go to school, I would paint. I actually won an award at my junior High last year for the painting I did of my mother a few weeks after she passed away. She was dressed in a long white dress, and she had angel wings. She was floating over the Chicago skyline.
I walk in the room and sit at an empty table. I'm one of the first students here, so I pull out my sketchbook, and work on the sketch I am drawing of Jason. I don't know how much time passes, but I am startled out of my art-induced haze by a deep voice saying "that's really good." I quickly shut my book, and turn around to see a tall, brown haired boy with piercing blue eyes staring into my also blue ones.
"Mind your own business." I reply coolly.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you, and I just noticed your sketch. It really is amazing." he says.
"Oh, well thanks," I say "and I'm sorry I snapped at you, It's just that I've never really showed anybody my work before, It's a little personal."
"That's okay, I'm Lucas, by the way."
"Levy." I say as I tentatively shake his hand.
"Levy, That's an interesting name, I like It." he says
"Lucas is cool to, I've never met any Lucases before." I say and we both laugh. Then, the teacher, Ms. Jenson walks in.
When class lets out, I can't help but take a moment of relief that at least one of my classes isn't totally horrible. Ms. Jenson seems really great, and I get the feeling that she's a no-nonsense kind of teacher. She talked a lot about how she wants this class to be very hands-on instead of her just lecturing us. I really appreciate this, because art is my favorite class, and I want to be able to learn by doing.
After class, Lucas and I walk out together, chatting when we run into Hope and Danielle, the two girls from my English class.
"Hey Lucas!" they say at the same time. I guess they know each other. I wonder if he's dating one of them...
WHOA! Where did that thought come from? I've never had a real boyfriend before, I haven't even had my first kiss yet, and I met Lucas an hour ago. I should not be having those kinds of thoughts within an hour of meeting him. Besides, there's no possible way he would ever think of me like that.
While I was lost in thought, the three of them had been chatting. I wasn't even paying attention, and I didn't hear a word they said!
"Levy?" Hope said.
"I'm sorry I kind of spaced out, what were you talking about?" I reply stupidly
"That's okay, we were just asking Lucas what he thought about Ms. Jenson, what do you think of her?"
"She seems really cool to me, and art is my favorite subject so I really hope she's a good teacher."
The rest of the day goes by in a blur. I don't see Hope, Danielle, or Lucas again, and I look for them after school while I wait for my brothers, but I don't see them.
As the weeks pass by, I quickly become friends with Danielle and Hope. We have English and art together, along with some other classes. It's nice to have some real friends again. We talk about all the normal teenage girl stuff, gossip, clothes, and boys. Turns out, neither is dating Lucas. Hope likes one of Lucas's friends, Ryan, and Danielle likes another of his friends named Jackson. I met both of them and they seem nice.
