"And, 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8.. Ashley! I want to see that leg lifted!"
Ashley rolled his eyes as the instructor decided to call him out and lifted his leg higher, not forgetting to point his toes so she wouldn't have anything more to complain about. I think she hates me. That has to be it. Counting off the steps in his head, he went into a leap then back down for a triple pirouette. Twenty more minutes.
After practice, he could hear the jocks coming back from the field with their loud voices and cleats hitting the ground. He quickly sighed and shoved his shoes and clothes into his bag after changing. The best part about being the only male dancer is the empty locker room. He smiled to himself as he changed before pulling on his earphones and grabbing his bag when he walked out.
Before he could even turn on his music, his best friend Miranda tackled him into a hug and squealed happily, talking about some soccer player that he honestly couldn't care less about. Like the amazing friend that he was, he turned to her with an eyebrow raised and scoffed.
"It seems like you talk about a different guy every day. Weren't you just so in love with Jacob from the basketball team?"
She placed a hand on her chest and gasped, "Jacob was so last week!"
"Jacob was Friday! It's barely Monday!" She shrugged at him and continued her rant about his 'otherworldly good looks'
Ashley discreetly turned on his music to drown her out. She wouldn't mind. Besides, her attention will be on another guy tomorrow.
Once Ashley got home, he dropped his bag by the door and took his shoes off. "Mama! What's cooking?" He walked into the kitchen and hugged his father's husband. "Mama, you were right. Miranda is all over a new guy today." They laughed together and his mama shook his head.
"I told you! That girl has a new man on her mind all the time." He gave his son's hand a gentle pat and smiled at him. "Your father wants to speak to you. He's in his office so knock first!" Before he even finished speaking, Ashley was already running down the hall to knock on the door of the office.
"Come in, Ashley." he heard his father's voice say and he stepped in with a smile.
"I promise I didn't do anything wrong, papa. Whatever they said is absolute garbage!" His father laughed and shook his head.
"I got an email from your dance teacher." Ashley couldn't help the groan that slipped past his lips. "Ash, what did I say about that?"
He stared at his father in disbelief. "You know she hates me! I think she's homophobic. An adorable gay guy with handsome fathers walks into her class, she has no choice but to hate him! She hates me papa!"
"No, she doesn't. She tough on you because she can see how talented you are. Which leads me back to the reason I called you in here. She emailed me about the football team. Their coach wants them to start taking ballet classes and she's assigned you to teach them."
Me teach an entire class of mindless sports playing apes?!
"Dad, you know I hate those idiots. Why didn't you tell her no?"
"For your information, I used to be one of those so called idiots."
He crossed his arms and scoffed. "You know that's different! You're not an idiot. You're my handsome, intelligent, father. If you were an idiot, I would have freaked out when you and mama tried to adopt me years ago."
His mama walked in and hit the back of his head. "Ashley, you were a little baby. You freaked out over the dumbest of things. I remember when we first saw you, the nurse tried to put some socks on your cute little feet and you screamed and cried until you turned purple. I couldn't watch so I rubbed your chubby tummy to distract you. Since that day, I knew you were our baby." He pinched Ashley's cheek gently and smiled. "It still calms you down, believe it or not."Derrick walked into his house after practice and dropped his bag on the couch. In his head, he counted down from ten until he heard his mother's voice from upstairs.
"Derrick? Honey, is that you?"
He smiled and walked up to greet her with a kiss on her cheek. "Is dad at work?"
She smiled softly and nodded. "You already know he is. When is he not at work." They shared a laugh and looked behind her.
"Where's my little girl?" His mother rolled her eyes and playfully hit him.
"On your bed. You should pay more attention to me. I carried you for nine months! And stop leaving your stinky gym bag on the couch!"
Derrick closed his room door and laid on his bed, holding his little puppy over his head. "How's my little girl today? Did mom take you out?" He was answered with a loud excited bark and laughed. "I'll take that as a no. I'll take you out then when we get back I have to shower. Can you believe coach wants us to take ballet classes to supposedly increase our agility. Oh well, at least I'll be getting taught by hot chicks." He set her down and stuck his head out of his room door. "Mom! Did you take Snow out for a walk today?"
He could almost feel her roll her eyes from where he was. "No, Derrick. She's your responsibility. By the way, we got a call from your coach earlier today. Something about ballet classes?"
"Yeah. He's making the whole team take them." He picked Snow up and carried her downstairs. "I'll be back, I'm going to take Snow for a walk."
Derrick slid his shoes on and messaged his teammates in a group chat.
Place your bets boys. Which sexy lady do you think is going to be our teacher? He connected the lead to Snow's harness and walked her outside as he got a message from the team captain.
Tristian: My money's on Miranda Lee.
Caleb: Nope. Isabella Jenkins. Its got to be her.
Austin: I bet Derrick is hoping it's Ashley Coleman. You guys know he's had the hots for him since freshman year.Derrick knew his eyes widened about three sizes upon reading that.
Derrick: What made you think that? I dislike that kid with a passion.
Austin: I've got eyes and ears. It's obvious. You'll never have a chance. He thinks you're a 'mindless sports playing ape'.
Tristan: Austin has a point. I've caught you staring at his ass a few times. You always looked like you just saw the cheesiest piece of pizza known to man.
Caleb: Yeah, dude. You've been eyeing that kid since freshman year. It's not subtle either. You wouldn't be the first though. Almost every guy has looked at Ash like that.Ash? When did they become friends? He decided to ignore his teammates and shoved his phone into his pocket. "Can you believe them Snow? They think I like Ashley Coleman. I always told them playing without helmets would give them brain damage but to get it this bad? Wow."
