Every part of my body was telling me to run, to scream, to do something. To save him. But I didn't. My feet were firmly planted to the ground. My eyes wide staring into space as if they were blind of what was in front of me. I didn't even flinch. Why? I don't know why. Maybe I'm just a bad person. My hair was the only thing moving, it blew gently in the wind, my body still statue like. My lips were slightly parted breathing in the air. I was savouring every breathe as if it would be my last. Eventually a transparent, perfect tear rolled out my eye and down my cheek. It edged its way to the corner of my mouth and I could taste it. The strange taste filled my mouth with emotion. Sad emotions.
Eventually my hearing started to come back to me. I was now slightly more aware of my surroundings. Cries, whimpers, one single, small voice. A whisper. My name. Someone was whispering my name in a weak voice. It eventually died out and then there was silence.
It must have been a couple of minutes later I zoned back in to the reality of what had happened. A huge feeling of guilt struck me first, then sadness followed. I had left Tommy to perhaps die while I was in shock? That was disgusting. I have never felt so guilty about anything. What if he isn't alive? I've killed him. I allowed him to die. I fell to my knees and took Tommy's hand and held it tightly in mine, His hand was cold.
"Tommy? Tommy! Can you hear me? Wake up, please Tommy!" I begged the lifeless body in front of me.
I fumbled getting my phone out of my pocket and my hands were shaking so much I thought I might end up ringing 888 not 999. I assumed I had dialled correctly when a lady answered asking which service I would like.
"Ambulance, please and hurry, its my brother, he's only seven and he's not moving." I cried.
"Can you tell us where you are and what happened?" The lady asked.
"Um Shaw Street, he was playing and went out into the road and a car... A car hit him." I answered.
"Is the driver of the car there now?" She asked.
I looked around the street. I wasn't aware of anything from the second Tommy was hit till a few minutes ago. There was the car that hit him but the driver had vanished.
"No, but their car is. Please, hurry he won't answer me and he isn't moving, if he's dead I swear.." I responded to the lady.
"Don't worry, an ambulance is on their way sweetheart. And a police car too. Keep holding his hand for me."The ambulance lady said.
"Okay." I said and dropped my phone.
A couple of people started coming out their houses to see what I was shouting and crying about. Shaw Street was never a very lively street, and everyone sort of kept to themselves. Tommy was lying in front of the car bonnet where he had been hit but the driver of the car was nowhere to be seen. It was unusually silent despite what had happened. Just me and Tommy on the road in front of this abandoned car and a couple of neighbours stood outside their door looking concerned and cautious. Tommy's face was white as a sheet and his body was cold.
A ambulance siren was getting louder and closer by the second until I could see it pull up behind the car that had hit Tommy. An overweight man in his late 40s jumped out the ambulance carrying a bag.
"Okay hello princess, I'm Nic. I'm a paramedic and I'm going to take care of this guy OK?" The man said.
I simply nodded. He yelled the word stretcher towards where he came from and gave me a reassuring smile.
"Can you tell me exactly what happened?" Nic asked.
"I don't really know.. I mean, he was playing, then next thing he was on the road and this car raced up from nowhere and knocked him down. I kind of went into shock I think for a couple of minutes, I just stood there astonished. Then I came around and called an ambulance but the driver has just vanished..." I explained. As I was explaining this to Nic a police car pulled up behind the ambulance and ran towards us asking people of the public to stay clear and started putting police tape around the area.
"Am I in trouble? Because I didn't do anything immediately?" I sobbed.
"Of course not darling, they just need to catch the man that knocked your brother over." Nic answered.
"What's your name sweetheart?" Nic asked.
"Rosie." I answered.
"OK Rosie, lets get you in the ambulance with your brother and we're going to take you both in." Nic said as Tommy was put on a stretcher.
