My Life In A Nutshell

It was 3:00 in the morning.

I slid down the bathroom wall and landed on the bare floor, the voices of the police still lingering in my head. I screamed hopelessly in an attempt to hush the frantic whispers.

Ever since my mother died seven years ago, I've been hearing voices at night, whenever I tried to shut them up, they just got louder and more persistent.

I sat there, waiting nervously for Kim, my auntie; whenever my dad had to go out of town, he would arrange for Kim to come stay with me. The thing about Kim is that her body doesn't seem to harness the power of self-control or wisdom for that matter!

She drank from as early as she woke up and always said that partying helped her to keep looking youthful, so she partied.

Every.  Single.  Night.

She always left me alone at night because of this ‘Mantra’. I always hate it when she comes back; my secret desire is that maybe, one day, she will get hit by a bus in her ever drunken state.

But this time I want her to come back because I need the comfort of someone… anyone.

As my brain was just about to go into overdrive, I heard the door slam.

I heard Kim’s alcohol induced laughter echo throughout the whole house, I rushed downstairs and pulled a stunned Kim into a clumsy hug.

“What’s up with all the love, you usually hate it when I come over.” Kim slurred.

 “Well I-”

“Do you have any food here” She said, tripping herself up into the kitchen to inspect the fridge.

“Err… no, I’m really glad you’re here Auntie Kim, I needed someone to come over, I-”

“Yeah, yeah cut the chit chat, I only came over here so your dad would give me my money.”

“What do you mean” I said with a quizzical look forming on my face.

“WOW you really are stupid” She said laughing. “The only reason I came over here is because your father pays me, not because I actually care about you, who would ever care about you” She said bursting into fits of laughter.

I stood there for a few seconds, letting the words sink. Then I ran up the stairs stopping at the top with my back to my auntie’s face as I heard her voice.

“Don’t delude yourself honey, no one will ever love you” Kim hiccupped at the bottom of the stairs.

With that I ran into my room and cried myself to sleep.
