"Kayla, sweetheart? If you are going out tonight, please be mindful of the weather. It's not going to be sunny as we expected from the forecast."
Her mother, Katherine Henderson, an average meaty woman, brown hair cut to a bob with mysterious hazel eyes and a dimple printed on the right side of her chin, stood outside her daughter's bedroom: a tea towel with green checked patterns interlacing through each stitch, drying up a glass held in her right hand, indicating she was in the middle of washing when the news had appeared, informing the changed climate. Not that Kayla was surprised by such a thing. Whenever hope seemed to blossom at the mention of a clear day, civilians were kept in the back of their minds that a storm may breach through the optimistic news. They were, of course in the middle of Winter; storms weren't hard to come by through the days. Surely the weather girl knew that when she made a turn in the conditions.
Mumbling a crisp response, Kayla lay quietly on her bed, staring up at her grey ceiling, coaxed into thinking of Adam and what expressions he'd be making at this time of day as he waited for a call intended for his job application he applied two weeks ago. He was going to inform her if he got it or not, which only made her question what he was thinking, and doing. Was he walking past his kitchen in hopes of a phone ringing? Did he have it anxiously on his lap in his bedroom? Such a ridiculous inquiry to occupy her time with, however when it came to her best friend and...well, she couldn't deny hoping the best for him no matter the situation.
Sounds were unrecognizable for a moment until she realized that there was a distant ringtone fading near the distance. Lost in her thoughts, her eyes glanced onto the blue comforter and suddenly gasped, grasping her Samsung just in time to save the caller from voicemail. "Hello?"
Her stomach flipped in longing when the husky tone of his voice registered on the other end. "Hey you, what are doing right now?"
Kayla couldn't help the suffocation she felt in her chest, squeezing her lungs together to the point where breathing became difficult, nor the rapid beating of her heart, jumpstarting as she forced herself to remain calm and respond fluently. "I'm thinking."
He chuckled on the other end, the sound angelic as it flooded through her ears, keeping it locked and stored away. God, how she adored his laugh; light with the balance of his husky tone. She could envision a grin stretched up to his ears, viewing his perfect line of pearls openly. "Yeah? Well, you wanna run shops with me? I got the interview for my job tomorrow afternoon and I need a new tie and toothbrush."
Her feet were on the floor before Adam could finish his sentence, excitement sparkling through her smile, even when he couldn't see it himself. "You got the interview? Adam, that's amazing! I'm so happy for you. I mean, there's no doubt they'll say no to you! Just wait, you'll be able to buy your stuff from now on instead of having to borrow from your dad all the time."
His laugh made her spine convulse as he agreed with another enthusiastic thought on what he hoped to do with the money he would earn. In the conversation she had with him, all thoughts on high school, her family, anxiety about studying for upcoming tests, and even the simple quiver of having a spider hiding deep in the dark corners of her room evaporated like water presenting itself to heat. All that mattered was how happy Adam was in having the chance to be independent and responsible for the years to come.
"So you wanna go?" He finally asked.
She jumped a little towards her closet, keeping in mind that any noise fighting passed her lips was covered with a cleared throat. Ripping open her doors, she already had begun to look through her clothes for something nice to wear, almost tearing through as some landed on the floor. "Of course, I will! I gotta make sure your teeth are sparkling like diamonds for them to see."
