Chapter 2

The next day, I rolled over from my sleep to see that the alarm clock read 10:24. My parents must have decided to let me sleep in. That was fine with me after all the nightmares I had. I felt like I had gotten two hours of sleep. I sat up and rubbed my head. Then decided it was time to get up. I headed down stairs following the smell of blueberry pancakes.

“Good morning,” my dad said from the table.

“Morning,” I said as I sat down groggily and grabbed a plate and a pancake to start eating.

            “Rough night?” he asked.

            “Yeah,” I said, “Where’s mom?”

“She got called in to work early this morning. She told me to remind you that you meet with Dr. Cooper today at 1:00.” Mom worked at the research center. Every division had one major area of work and ours was the research center. I didn’t know much about what she did because she wasn’t allowed to say, but I knew it had something to do with genes and figuring out there full function and capability of being changed.

“I know. And after that I’m going to Benson’s.”

“Alright. She also told me to tell you she is going to try and get off work and meet you beforehand. She needs to talk you.”

“Uhh, okay,” I said, giving him a confused look.

“I don’t know what it’s about. That’s just what she told me.” Suddenly I wasn’t hungry anymore. I pushed my plate away and stood up.

            “Everything okay?” dad asked.

“Yeah,” I lied, “I’m going to take a shower.” Everything was definitely not okay. These dreams were starting to get to me and everything just felt off. I went upstairs, took a shower, and got ready. I worked on homework, trying to kill time until my meeting with Dr. Cooper. I got so engulfed in my thoughts and worries dad came in to get me.

“12:30, Ramona, time to get going.”

“Thanks, dad,” I said as I hopped up, “See you later.” I walked to the psychology center, which was only a few blocks away, thinking about what I was going to tell Dr. Cooper this week. I walked in and had a seat in the lobby, waiting for Dr. Cooper to come out of her office and call me in.

“Remi!” Dr. Mitchell, Louis’ mother, called out, “I haven’t seen you in forever.” Brenda Mitchell was the other psychologist in Division 3. Fifty students would be too much for one psychologist to handle so they split it between two. Remi is what Louis and his family always used to call me. I hadn’t been called that in years.

“Hi, Dr. Mitchell,” I said, “How are you?”

“Good!” she said, sitting down beside me, “How have you been doing?”

            “Good,” I answered.

“Ready Ramona?” Dr. Cooper, the tall, blonde woman said as she came out of her office.

“Yeah,” I said, trying to smile, “See you later, Dr. Mitchell.”

“See you, Remi,” Dr. Mitchell smiled. I walked in and had a seat on the couch as Dr. Cooper sat across from me on the chair, pad of paper and pen in hand. The room was very bright with sun shining in the window reflecting of the white walls. Dr. Cooper did try to add some color and make it feel more like home with different colored flower pots and vases placed around the room.
