It was a normal day at Death City High School, the sun was out and my best friend was going on and on about a cheerleader he had seen at practice. I was zoning out, considering he normally was babbling on about meaningless things. Just before the bell rang, he slapped my shoulder to get my attention.
"What is it, Blackstar?" I asked, irritated. He was being particularly adamant about getting my attention.
He wore a huge grin, "You know that there's a new girl starting today, right?" Blackstar gave me a look, implying that I should go hit on her or something. I rolled my eyes and shook my head, I was not going to go hit on the poor girl just because she was "fresh meat". You see, our school is sort of private, so we've basically been attending classes with same people since elementary school. This also meant that we sort of had a strict dress code; no jeans, had to have a collared shirt, no flip flops. There were more rules, but those were the ones that stuck out to me. I slung my bag and head to my first period class, it was some science class. The teacher was pretty entertaining considering he always tried to integrate dissection into every class.
I took my usual seat in the back, I slouched and pulled out my journal. I opened it and wrote today's date. I waited for the late bell as the last of the students to filed in. The bell had rang and Stein was taking attendance. As he was about to finish up, the door opened and a girl came in. She had her blonde hair in pigtails and wore a school girl skirt with a button up shirt and tie, pared with a yellow-cream vest and combat boots. My heart nearly stopped in my chest.
"I'm so sorry I'm late, I got lost," She was breathing a bit hard, clearly she had been running. She handed him a note and then glanced around the room. I made eye contact with her, her eyes were piercing, emerald green. It seemed like minutes before she looked away, but I felt something inside myself, my chest felt funny.
The school day went on and I didn't go out of my way to meet with that girl again. She looked as if she could and would kick my ass. Finally, the school day came to an end, and I started on my way home. The girl from my science class was a few feet in front of me, she was walking hurriedly in the same direction as me. I yawned as I made it to a bus stop, she was sitting on the bench waiting. I leaned against the sign and glanced at her, she had a book open and seemed to be reading. She glanced up at me and I blushed, looking away. What the hell is this feeling? I thought, chewing my lower lip.
The bus pulled up and she quickly got onto it, I followed after her. I took a seat and spotted her, she was seemed to be glaring at me. I looked at the floor and tried to not concentrate on the fact that she seemed to hate me already. I spaced off and finally it was my stop to get off. I stood up, looking up from the floor finally and the girl had stood up too. I couldn't help but notice that this seemed awful coincidental.
We got off and she seemed to have started walking quicker than she had been previously. I stuck my hands in my pockets and continued on my way to my apartment, she, unfortunately, was going the same way. I sighed softly as I saw her walking up to my apartment building. She looked back at me and I gave her a half smile. She looked away as she hurried inside, I went inside and headed upstairs to where my apartment was. She was waiting there and she happened to be waiting right by my door. I tried to play it off cool, as I walked over to the door.
She moved swiftly, attempting to take a swing at me, but I caught her arm and covered her mouth. I knew her next measure would be to scream. I sighed as I stared at her, she seemed genuinely scared of me.
"Listen, new girl, I—," I started.
"I have a name, its Maka," She stated boldly.
I rolled my eyes, "Okay, Maka," I said, becoming slightly irritated. "This apartment right here," I gestured to it with my head, "is my apartment," I explained saucily as I dropped my handss.
She froze and then dropped her arm, her cheeks dusted with blush. "Oh," Maka murmured. "I thought... You..."
"Yea, I got what you thought," I retorted, grabbing my keys from my pocket.
She sighed. "I'm sorry, look we got off on the wrong foot." She said, sticking her hand out. "I'm Maka Albarn, I'm moving in in the apartment across from you," I took her hand and shook it, eyeing her suspiciously. "Okay, normally, people introduce themselves after meeting someone."
"I'm Soul," I said flatly, "We have most of our classes together and I live here," I pointed out. "You live alone?" I asked, honestly wondering.
"No, my father lives with me," She seemed bitter, but I didn't feel it was my place to pry. We said good bye and I went to work after I had a snack.
The next few weeks we walked to the apartment building together, we talked about everything. I learned that her parents are divorced, her dad had cheated on her mom.
Why are you living with him then?
Ah, you see, my mom is an archaeologist, so she travels a lot. I wouldn't be able to attend school if I lived with her, so I had to live with my dad, who's the new head of security at school.
We touched base about my situation. My parents didn't like me, so I moved out and started living on my own. I didn't get into the nitty gritty details of everything because I felt it might kill whatever mood there was. She remembered her dad used to read to her as a child, but he hasn't read much recently and likes to blow his money on booze. She's learned to take care of herself and make friends, even though her father doesn't seem to like me much. Probably because I'm a bit messy, or at least look messy.
We paused at the top of the stairs and looked at each other, Maka looking a bit smug. "Soul, can I tell you a wonderful thing?" She asked softly, her cheeks seemed to darken some.
"Yea, of course," I said, looking down at her.
"I couldn't help noticing you staring at me," She said softly, glancing up at me. "I know I probably shouldn't say this, but I really believe I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me."
I bit my lip, she was right. Even though we'd only known each other for a few weeks, I realized that I was madly in love with this girl. She was tough and soft at the same time, she knew what to say when I didn't and she always knew how to make me smile. I nodded, I couldn't lie to her.
"I knew it," She said with a smile. "I think I'm in love with you too, Soul," She murmured, looking down to the floor. I'm not sure why, but I felt the need to kiss her. I put a finger under her chin and looked into her eyes.
"Good," I breathed, leaning in as I closed my eyes. I kissed her gently, I could tell she was surprised, but she leaned into me. Just then something hit my head and caused me to break the kiss.
"GET AWAY FROM MY MAKA, YOU OCTOPUS HEAD!" Maka's father shouted at me. I looked at what he had thrown at me, it was a plastic apple. "DON'T YOU DARE LAY A HAND ON MY PREC—"
"Papa!" Maka yelled back at her father, glaring at him. "It was just a kiss! I'm 17 years old, you don't need to control every aspect of my life!" She huffed, looking back at me with a forlorn expression as she mouthed an apology. She went inside her apartment and I couldn't help but smile, I had just kissed the most beautiful girl in the world.
