The next day, I get changed, and quickly eat with Jonah. "Where are you two going in such a hurry," dad asks. "I'm taking him to the park," I say. After we eat, Jonah and I walk to the beach. "Do you think that Reed and Zach will be at the park," Jonah asks. "Um, probably not," I say. When we get to the park, I sit on a bench, and Jonah plays on the playground. A little girl runs over to Jonah and they start playing together. I look around for someone who is watching the little girl, and see Zach. "Hey,"he says, sitting next to me. "Hey." "I see Reese made a new friend," Zach says. "Is she your sister," I ask. "Yeah." "Sorry, that was an obvious question," I say, cracking a smile. He laughs. "It's fine." While we are talking, Jonah and Reese disappear. "Um, Zach? Where did they go?!" "Reese! Jonah," we start yelling. We look around the park, but don't find them.
"Where could they be," I ask. We walk around, searching for them, and then I get an idea. "The ice cream shop!" "Now isn't the time for ice cream, Ronnie," Zach says. "No, I mean, they could've gone to the ice cream shop. I mean it's like right across the street." "You have a point there." We run across the street and into the shop, where Reese and Jonah are sitting at the table eating. "Jonah, you shouldn't have left," I say, sitting in the seat across from him, since Reese and him are sitting next to each other. "Yeah, Reese, what were you thinking ," Zach asks, sitting next to me. "Well, Jonah and I were playing, and we got hungry," Reese starts. "You guys were talking, and we didn't want to interrupt, so we came here to eat," Jonah finishes. Zach and I make eye contact for a quick second. "You could've told us, so we didn't freak out,. Zach says. "Sorry, Zach. Sorry, Ronnie," Jonah and Reese say. I hug Jonah. "It's alright. Just, don't do that agin," I say.
Zach and I pay for their ice cream, and get some for us too. Well, I try to pay, but when I go to give the person money, Zach stops me. "I'll pay," he says, handing the cashier enough money for the four of us. I grab my ice cream, and we all sit in the booth. "So, are you and Jonah going to live here forever," Reese asks. "Yes," Jonah says, the same time I say "no." Reese looks at me. "Well, we are going to live here for the whole summer. Then Jonah and I go back to the city with our mom," I say. "Oh," Reese says, sounding kind of sad. "But, Ronnie, I like it here. I'm not going to go home with you and mom. I'm going to stay here with dad," Jonah says.
I look at Jonah, and see how serious he is when he said that. I think Zach knew I had no idea what to say, because he chimed in. "Well, your mom will miss you. You guys can come every summer alright," he says. I look at him and mouth thank you. "Well, yeah. I guess you're right. Mom will miss me, and it's nice here in the summer," Jonah says, smiling. Jonah tells Reese all about the city. I look out the window. "Oh wow. Jonah, it's getting dark. We should he'd back to dads house," I say. We all say goodbye, and Jonah and I walk to the house. "I was starting to get a little worried there," dad says. "Dad, we wouldn't have gone far," I say. "Yeah. We were with Zach and Reese," Jonah chimes in. "Oh. Did you two have fun," he asks. "Yes! Reese and I were playing on the playground, and we were fighting off pirates. Than, Zach got us all ice cream," Jonah says, smiling. Dad looks at me. "I tried paying for Jonah and me, but he wouldn't let me," I say. "That's alright. Zach is a great kid. I'm glad that you two are becoming friends," dad says. After dinner, I go into my room, and draw for a while.
The next day, I change into my white shirt, black hoodie, black jeans, maroon Vans, and I put my necklace with the 'R' on. I run down the hall, and into the kitchen. "Morning, dad," I say. He looks at me like I have two heads. "Good morning," he replies. "What's for breakfast," I ask, sitting at the table. "Well, I was thinking that we would have chocolate chip pancakes. How does that sound?" "Good, but I have a better idea," I say, smiling. He looks at me. I stand up, and walk to the counter. "Dad, go watch television or something. I will make breakfast." He looks at me. I smile. "Go," I say again. He turns around and walks into the family room to watch television. I make the chocolate chip pancakes, but I make sausage and bacon too. When everything is done, I put the food on our plates, and I put whipped cream and a strawberry on he pancakes. "It's ready," I say. Jonah and dad walk into the room. "Oh wow! It's PANCAKES," Jonah says, sitting down, and starts eating. "Yeah. Dad, if you don't mind, I made some other stuff," I say. "No. I mean, it's fine." Dad sits with us, and we start eating. When we are done, I put the leftovers in a container, and put it in the fridge.
While dad and I are cleaning up, I hear a knock at the door. I brush my hands on my jeans as I open the door. I see Reese standing on the doorstep next to Zach. "Hi. Can Jonah come play," Reese asks. "Um, I don't know. Come on in," I say. Zach and Reese come in. "Hey, dad," can Jonah play with Reese," I ask. Dad walks into the room. "Sure. Just not here. I have some work to do," he says. "Okay." Jonah walks into the room, and Reese and him start talking about pirates who want to eat all the gold, which is actually gold covered chocolate. "Ronnie, I need you to stay here so you can help with the work," dad says. Then, he walks out of the room. "Okay. Um, Zach, can you write down your address on a piece of paper for me? I might stop by to pick Jonah up if dad wants him back," I say. "Sure," he says. I grab a pen and paper, and he writes it down. "Thanks." The three of them leave, and I walk into the kitchen. "So, what do you need help with," I ask. "Two things. One of them is that I need you to tidy up Jonah's room."
"Okay. What is the second thing?" "Why are you being so nice? You're acting like a different person.. "What do you mean?" "Well, when you first came here, you wouldn't even talk to me. It's like you were mad at me after all these years," he starts. "Yeah. I was." "What changed?" "A friend of mine talked to me about it. I should've given you a second chance, and I never did. I'm sorry," I say. "It was Zach. Wasn't it?" "No. It was a friend." He looks at me, and I sigh. "Yes. It was." "Ronnie, I really am glad that you two are friends. You two have more in common than you know." I look at him. I walk into Jonah's bedroom, and quickly clean it. I finish a few minutes later. "You can go to Reese and Zach's house now. I will call when I need you guys home," dad says. I grab the paper with the address, and walk down the street. I get to the house, and knock on the door. A woman answers the door. The woman is tall. She is wear a dark red shirt, black sweatpants, and a gold bracelet. "Can I help you," she asks. "Um, um is this Zach Herron's house," I ask, feeling my face heat up.
