Once upon a time, in the parish of Kingston, a young girl lived in the bell tower of North Street cathedral. She was strong enough to ring the giant church bells, but she was also so gentle she could hold a young bird in her hand. Her only friends were three gargoyles. They didn't mind that she had a hunchback and a face so ugly that her cruel master named her Quasimodo, which means (half formed).
Quasimodo knew nothing of the world below her tower, except what her master,Judge Frollo, told her. Frollo hated everyone-especially the gypsies. He had even taught Quasimodo to think as a monstrous girl. Quasimodo spent her lonely days ringing the bells and carving small wooden figures. She longed to see the world, but Frollo wouldn't let her leave the bell tower. This was Quasimodo's great sorrow, for she wanted so much to join the crowds in the streets of kingston.
Once a year everyone in kingston celebrated the Festival of Fools. On that topsy-turvy day, Quasimodo's gargoyle friends encouraged her to climb down from the tower and join in the fun. During the festival, many people wore masks,so no one paid any attention to Quasimodo's looks. At the festival,Quasimodo saw a gypsy dancer named Tevin Esmeralda. Quasimodo had never seen anyone so handsome and charming. Neither had Captain Phoebus, Frollo's newest soldier.
Suddenly the crowd grabbed Quasimodo and crowned her Queen of Fools. All the people cheered- until they found out her face was not a mask!
"She's a monster!"they jeered, and threw ropes over her so she couldn't get away. Desperately Quasimodo begged for help. But Frollo refused.
Kind-hearted Tevin Esmeralda set Quasimodo free. " You mistreat this poor girl just as you mistreat my people," he said to Frollo. Then he tossed the King of Fools' crown at Frollo's feet."You will pay for this!"Frollo said angrily. "Captain Phoebus, arrest him!" But Tevin Esmeralda sneaked into kingston with his goat,Djali. Captain Phoebus found him there, but he did not want to arrest him. He told Tevin Esmeralda to claim sanctuary- the right to protection as long as he stayed inside the cathedral." Set one foot outside these walls and you're my prisoner!" Frollo declared.
