As Garrett laid in his cell, he soaked in the odd quiet that seemed to consume him. Mitchel used to live in the cell to his right, and Dylan too his left. Two of the people he trusted the most were now gone.
He was never the type of person to worry about the future. He had always figured that he would make it somehow with all of his friends. It had been a few months since losing Oscar, and almost a full year since losing Connor. The future, now, was something to worry about about. Garrett had begun to think he was invincible. No one was invincible, how much more time did he have?
The soft footsteps on the concrete floor slowly brought him back to reality. He glanced up at his doorway and noticed a figure standing there. He slowly sat up on his bunk and saw that it was Lucas. "Dave said you were in here."
He placed his head in his hands. "How is Clayton doing?"
"He is doing alot better. Dr. Stevens said that he will be able to walk and help out in no time." She entered the cell and took a seat on the bed next to him.
"Good. When he is ready myself and Davie will take him and that girl that came with you guys out on a run."
"Rebekah?" Lucas questioned him. He shrugged, he didn't exactly get a name from her. "I have seen her around when I was in Woodbury. I know for a fact that she can handle herself."
"I want to know if she can work in a group well." He finished as he stood up and leaned against the doorway leading into his cell.
The guilt of sending William and Rebecca out to kill Lakota began to set in. He needed to drink in the silence to counteract the fear that threatened to engulf him. She must be gone, she had to die or at least go very far away. He realized too late that he misjudged everything and rapidly his hand began to shake. What has he done? How is it that just a thought can bring long buried emotions and stir what was settled?

William threw up his fist to tell Rebecca, who was behind him, to stop moving without anything being said between the two. The woodland seemed ominously quiet. They paused, now that even the sound of their own footfalls was silent, all that could be heard was the susurration of the leaves in the gusty wind. Looking up, they were transfixed by the myriad of fluttering leaves that danced in the high boughs, making a living roof above them. They were calmed, almost hypnotized, but the longer they stared the more the leaves looked like eyes staring back down at them and the boughs seemed to draw closer, blocking the sunlight as if they were forming a cage around them.
William looked at the ground, studying the trail that they were on. This was the same trail that they followed in. Though, something was different. "We are being followed." He mumbled quietly as he turned around and swung his M110 Sniper Rifle around to his front. He stayed low as Rebecca looked at him cautiously.
She studied the area William was looking at, but she couldn't see anything. "How do you know?"
"I'm not gonna teach you right now." He moved over to a couple of trees and he motioned Rebecca to follow him, which she did. "Someone followed us to that town, the odds of them still tailing us are pretty damn high."
"How many?" Rebecca asked nervously.
He knew about the amount, about seven or ten guys most likely. But he wasn't going to tell her because he sensed the fear in her voice. "Just a couple." He lied as he bit his cheek. "We have the advantage though."
"Hows that?"
"We now know they are there."
As the time pasted, the two sat apart. Both of them with a tree at their fronts to hopefully block the opponents view of them and to stop a bullet or two. William had known Rebecca sense before this kind of world started. They went to high school together. Though she wasn't the type of girl to talk to him back then. He was a strong hunting, fishing, cussing, farming, truck working country boy. And she was one of the cool, preppy kids who would barely look his direction. But here they were, in the same boat and have been for almost two years.
