My parents and Antoine stand outside on the porch as Trey and I pull up in the car with Judiah in the back. Back at one. Trey sighs as he stops the engine and says,

"We're here,"

"Here they come," I say while unbuckling my seatbelt.

My parents and Antoine walk towards our car with smiles and warm welcomes. Really, I'm happy to be in CT., but it's the reason why we came that pisses me off. Trey and I get out of the car and greet them.

"How was the trip?" My mother asks as Trey gets Judiah out of his car seat.

Antoine brushes past me and swoops Judiah from Trey's arms. Proud uncle. I chuckle.

"Well come inside and eat and rest. The men will get the stuff later." My mother tells us while takingTremaine by the arm and me by the hand and leading us into the house.

My father and Antoine who's carrying Judiah trails behind us.

"The trip was long, but we're glad to be here," Trey says, responding for the both of us.

The familiar smells of home and my mother's cooking bombards me as we enter the home. My mom probably cooked something special for Trey and I. I'm personally grateful because I was tired of Trey's ham and cheese sandwiches and fries.

"Go wash up for dinner. I made a lot of mange pou nou tout," she says while walking to Antoine.

"Banm pitit la(Give me the child)" she demands.

"I just got him, ma," Antoine says.

I smile and throw an arm around Trey's waist. We walk down the hallway and into the bathroom to wash up.

"How long do you think we'll be here?" I ask while watching Trey wash his hand.

I fiddle with the engagement ring on my ring finger.

"I'm not sure. Until the police say it's safe." He replies with a tired sigh.

"You're tired," I say while coming behind him and hugging him.

"Very tired, but I'm gonna eat first." He says while rubbing my hands.

I chuckle,"My mother would force you if you didn't want to. It's a Haitian thing,"

He turns and kisses my lips,"I'd never refuse your mother's blazin' food."

We kiss again and again until we're full on making out.

"In here though?" Antoine asks.

I jump in surprise and blush. I turn to see Antoine standing there with a disgusted but amused look on his face. Trey laughs.

"Nosy." I say while detaching myself from Tremaine.

"Y'all had the door open so obviously you wanted to be watched."

I roll my eyes. Trey follows behind me as we walk back down the hallway and into the kitchen. My father and mother are seated and waiting patiently for us. Judiah is in my mother's arms. Well, my dad looks a little annoyed.

"You two pran twop tan." My dad booms.

"Sorry," I say.

Trey gives me a confused look and I shake my head. We take our seats and I stare at all the food on the table. Rice, fried plantains, macaroni, beet salad, chicken, mixed vegetables, and pickled salad.

My father quickly prays over the food and we dig in. Heaven. Well, a bit of heaven. Trey clears his throat and we all look at him.

"Thank you for having us at our time of need," he says.

"No no. We're family. No need to say thank you," my mother says.

My father nods in agreement. Antoine slaps Trey back.

"We good, fam," Antoine says.

Judiah begins to fuss in my mother's arms.

"He's hungry and needs to be fed," My mother says.

Trey gets up and retrieves the baby bag. He takes out the bottle and heads over to the microwave to hear it up. My mother smiles proudly. She's not used to seeing men help take care of their child so much.

Tremaine hands the bottle to my mother who immediately puts the bottle into Diah's mouth. Trey takes his place and resumes his meal.

"So this man who's been bothering you two, do you know him personally?" My dad asks.

"No, that's the crazy part. He must be mentally ill," I assume.

"The devil is out trying to persecute you two," my mother starts,"But we won't let him win,"

Trey slowly chews his food and nods. The room falls silent and only the sounds of the utensils clinking against the dinnerware can be heard.

"Yo," Antoine says breaking the silence,"You wanna play some one-on-one later?"

Ugh.

"That's all you do? Play basketball?" I ask my brother.

"It's summer. I also work. Mind your business." He replies.

He turns back to Trey.

"So, yes or no?"

Trey shrugs," Sure. I'm a little rusty but I can still whoop your behind."

The doorbell rings and my mother frowns.

"I wasn't expecting any visitors,"

My father get up,"I'll get it,"

A minute later, I hear my father say loudly,"Jeremiah! How are you?"

Oh freak. 😒
