Chapter 1
Nervous was and understatement as I stood in line waiting to get an audition number. I had been standing in line for over an hour but I didn't really care. This was the biggest opportunity of my life and I was ready to make my dreams come true. Once I was handed my number I was directed towards the waiting room. The waiting room was not really a room at all. It was more like an arena. There were thousands of people inside and many of them were practicing for their auditions. Of course this didn't help the noise level at all. Any person walking by that didn't know we were all auditioning for X Factor would easily mistake it for a rock concert.
I glanced at my number again to figure out what seat I would be in. After what felt like three years of pushing my way through the crowd and searching for my seat I finally found it. I sat in my seat for about thirty minutes before I decided I wasn't going to sit silently in a chair for six more hours. Sitting two seats down to my right was a boy who looked about my age playing on his phone. I would be doing the same except I was so nervous last night I forgot to charge my phone and it only had twenty percent of its battery life left. I wanted to save the rest of the battery so I could call my mom and dad after the audition. I looked at the boy as I had a small battle in my head trying to convince myself to talk to him. He had curly brown hair and piercing green eyes that I couldn't bring myself to look away from. He probably could tell I was staring because he looked up from his phone and caught my gaze. I gave him a small smile because I didn't know how else to respond. Honestly I thought he was just going to ignore me and look back down at his phone but to my surprise he didn't. He gave me a dimpled smile back and a half awkward wave. I laughed and couldn't help but think how cute he was. I decided it would be best to go ahead and introduce myself and maybe we could pass the time together. "Hi I'm Maggie," I practically screamed so he could hear me over all the noise.
Instead of telling me his name he turned around and started to gather his stuff. He stood up and sat back down in the empty seat that was between us. "I thought it would be a good idea to sit closer to you so we don't lose our voices before we even get to audition I hope that's okay I'm so nervous to sing in front of the judges, but I've been waiting all my life for an opportunity like this," I listened as her rambled on and on not knowing what to do. He must have noticed he was rambling because he took a breath and said, "Oh, and hi I'm Harry." After this we both bust out laughing until our stomach's hurt.
Over the next few hours we asked each other all the basic questions people normally ask when they are getting to know another person. I found out that Harry's favorite color is blue, favorite food is tacos, and favorite movie is the Notebook. He also attempted to show me how to juggle, but we ended up hitting someone in the head who used very colorful words to express his aggravation. Harry also sang his audition solo for me multiple times. He had a great raspy voice and I knew he would make it to boot camp. I just hoped I was good enough to make it too. When he finished singing for me he asked to hear mine. I wouldn't do it, though. I was too nervous and wanted to save it for the real thing.
Eventually our section was called to line up and get ready to audition. My number was one in front of Harry's so I guess he would get to see me sing after all.
Harry P.O.V.
I wasn't a patient person when it came to waiting in lines for such. I had already been sitting for an hour and the thought of sitting in the same uncomfortable spot for many more was painful. These auditions were really putting my patience to the test. I had to find something to do other than playing on my phone because my battery wasn't going to last forever. I looked up from my phone trying to figure out how I was going to entertain myself and immediately caught the gaze of stunning blue eyes. Behind the eyes I found the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She had long blonde wavy hair that fell over her shoulders and to the middle of her back. She had light freckles sprinkled along her cheek bones and nose. She held herself confidently but looked slighlty embarrassed to be caught looking my way.
We kind of just stared at each other until she sent a small smile my way. Her blue eyes lit up with her smile and I couldn't help but to return one back. I gave a slight wave and laughed at how awkward we were being.
She started talking but it was pointless since it was so loud. I moved closer to her so I could introduce myself and have her actually hear my name.
Maggie and I talked for hours. We chatted about random crap to our biggest hopes and dreams. I asked her how she ended up auditioning for X Factor and she told me her story, "Well when I was four I started swimming and loved it. My parents always swore I had gills because I practically lived in the water. Swimming was my life and I had never considered anything else, nor had my parents. It had always been my safety zone and gave me a promised future. I've been offered full rides for universities in London and in the states. Swimming was what I counted on doing for as long as I could until I discovered singing. It was something different from what I had done all my life and I like that. Of course my parents completely opposed me singing instead of swimming. I asked for one chance to see if singing was even a possibility for me. If it didn't work out I promised to choose a university and continue swimming. They let me have one chance so here I am," she finished opening her arms dramatically to prove her point. "Your turn," she said pointing at me.
I told her all about the band I was in back home and how I wanted a professional opinion on my voice. "Well let's hear it then," she said laughing.
"Seriously?" I asked with my eyebrows raised.
"Sure, you're bouncing around like crazy. It's obvious you're nervous. Just sing your audition solo to me for extra practice."
I rehearsed my song one time and was not happy with it so I sang it through a couple more times. When I felt confident and comfortable about my audition I gave Maggie a smug look, "Now let me hear yours."
"I'm afraid I can't do that."
"Aw come on. Please..." I begged poking my bottom lip out.
"Nope, sorry. My lips are sealed until I'm up on that stage. This way if I'm going to suck I will only have to suck once and embarrass myself once."
"Come on, I know you don't suck."
"Well I guess we are about to find out," Maggie replied as a director came over towards our section announcing it was time to line up backstage.
