“What on earth are you doing?”

“What do you mean what am  I doing?”

I turned to look at the girl who I’ve been friends with since we were five years old. Our friendship started when she ever so helpfully pushed me off my bike on our first day of school. I tugged her piggy tail and tada!.. we'd been best friends ever since that day. Doing up the button on my excruciatingly tight skinny jeans, I breathed a sigh of relief.

“You’re tugging at your jeans,” she said.

“And tucking your stomach in weird.”

“I’m tucking my fat in,” I said defensively.

At that, she looked at me and burst out laughing.

“HEY!” I said smiling back at her.

I playfully threw a cushion at her.

“It’s alright for you, skinny Ann. I only have to look at a McDonald’s and my waist grows an inch!” I laughed.

She looked at me seriously, all humour gone.

“Scarlett, you are the most beautiful person I know,” she said. “

On the ins…”

“No, on the inside and out!” she added sternly.

I looked at her and smiled. She could be so sweet sometimes.

“Even though you do moan like a bitch.” She giggled and I knew it wouldn’t last long.

I pulled my black vest top over my hips and gave myself the once over in the mirror. My long wavy brown hair fell naturally down past my shoulders. I stand at a tall five foot eight; t kind of helps with the extra weight I seemed to carry. I’m not huge but I’m not catwalk model thin either. It doesn’t bother me that much to be honest, and even if it did I wouldn’t show it to save myself embarrassment.

“Anyway señorita, I gotta get going” Brooke said to me, getting up from her lounging position on my bed.

“Anywhere nice?” I asked, turning my head to her.

“Gotta haaawwwtt dateeee!” She purposely stretched out the words and grinned to me.

“Have fun!” I said, laughing, and with that, she left me with my thoughts. I sat on my bed and checked my watch. He should be up by now. I dialled the familiar number and let it ring, holding the phone to my ear.

“Mornin…” he greeted me.

Not the most romantic gesture ever but hey, everyone has off days.

“Hey sweet.. How you doing? I’ve missed you!” I replied, twirling a strand of my hair round my finger.

Cliché or what but it’s a habit of mine. A habit that seriously pisses Brooke off on a daily basis.

“Uh yeah I’m good.”

“Um.. Great! I’ve finally got my ticket. Not long now!” I smiled to myself.

I leaned over to my bedside drawer, just to double check. Yup, still there, waiting for me to take it away and use it.

“Ticket? What? Wait, oh yeah.. yeah can’t wait. Listen, babe, I can’t talk now. I’ll phone you later, 'kay?”

“Okay.. Love y..” But before I had chance to reply he was gone, the phone line beeping, telling me we had been disconnected.

Strange, but I suppose he must be a busy boy. And it is early, there.

Listen, I'd better explain before we get any further, that was my boyfriend Scott. Usually he's more enthusiastic, but, it is early there. Oh yeah, I forgot, Scott lives in New York, the Big Apple, over the waters in America. And me? Well, I live in little old London, England. I know, that’s gotta be hard?

Yeah, sometimes but it works for us, sometimes it works with loads of long distance relationships. I met him through my cousin who lives at the Big Apple as well. We see each other a couple of times a year. I know it’s not perfect, but that’s love. AND he’s pretty cute, which makes it worth even more.

Still… His reaction to my phone call played on the back of my mind all night and I couldn't help the thoughts that followed.

(Note from Meg-

Hi guys! Sorry its so short but it's just a taster to set the scene. I promise more action next chapter! I'd love to know what you think. What do you think of Scarlett, Brooke and Scott? Any cast ideas?
