Chapter 23:

Eric and I quickly made our way to the dining hall. Everyone had been summoned and was now sitting in their seats.

I took a seat in the back row as Eric made his way to the front. Everyone was silent, knowing something was obviously wrong. The atmosphere was menacing as everyone was tense and shifting uncomfortably in their seats. They were all in their nightwear, as it was eight in the morning.

“You have all been gathered here, as this hour, to be warned,” he started. “There has been a pack of shifters ordered on the academy-”

That was it, to break the silence. Chaos took place in the room, as faces contorted with fear and horror. I sat there, trying my best to keep my face absent; but my stomach was going wild. The whole thought of them made me shiver, and want to find safety. But it was hard to be safe from them. As the name says; they can shift into shadows from a physical form and back within seconds. That is why they were so dangerous. You would be called a ‘hero’ and ‘bold’ if you had ever succeeded in killing one. They were one of the hardest things to kill in all thirteen realms. One of the most feared.

“Silence!” Eric closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Listen! We have only till nightfall. There will be at least two of the staff members having portals open throughout the day. Figure out where you intend to go and speak to them. Whether you’re going back to the demon realm, or another; I suggest you leave Earth.”He opened his eyes and stared at the full crowd. “I hope you all stay safe, whether you stay or go, and have a good life. If you wish to come back to the academy, then find someone who can make a portal and come back in a few weeks. It may or may not be running, but I can guarantee some type of shelter.” Glancing at me, as he said, “besides; being homeless is always a bitch. Come to the hall sometime today if you wish to leave Earth. I cannot give you my absolute word that you will be safe if you stay here; dismissed.”

Sound broke out again as the crowd dispersed.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to stay or if I was going to leave. All I really knew is that I was going to keep a safe distance from the Shifters.

A shiver went uncomfortably down my back at the thought. I had had my confrontations with Shifters, and I planned to keep my meetings with them to a minimum.

I paced my room, Charis watching me as he put the clothes in his small backpack. Wait…backpack? “Where are you going? I thought that you were going to stay at the a-academy,” I stared at him, puzzled.

He shook his head. “Nope, I have people I want to live for. I’m going, been here too long.”

I raised my eyebrow. “We just got back.”

“Lacey, I don’t intend to die because I just got back here. If anyone stays here, they won’t make it out. Have you ever seen a Shifter? They’re creepy…with a capital ‘C’, okay?”

“Jee, I had no idea what so ever.” I dead panned him. Then I thought. “Do you have a family?”

He nodded his head. “The girl who was with me at the hotel inn was my sister and-”

I chocked on thin air. I looked at him weirdly, and then beckoned him to continue. “I have a younger brother and a father.”

I nodded my head, so he doesn’t have a mum…and has a brother/sister complex…thing? Heavy.

I glanced at the ceiling. “I think I’m going to stay…”

“The hell you’re not,” Eric exclaimed, looking at me as if I were insane.
