A crack sound reached Nanami's ears. Nanami swiveled and stared at the fresh hole in the glass window.

"Again, huh?" Nanami complained as she noticed the crack in the window.

How do you do? I'm Momozono Nanami.

As she whipped out a roll and started to tape up the crack, she asked her father, "The money loaners broke the window's glass again, dad. Are you repaying the money properly?"

"Don't worry Nanami!", he cried before adding, "With this 10, 000¥ betting ticket, I plan to replay all my debts in one fell swoop!"

Nanami quickly took his words in and every little part of her flushed with anger. "You spent money betting on horse racing, again...?!" She picked up the secret container in which held all their money and looked inside. It was empty. "Argh! This month's food expense that I put in here...!"

Currently, I'm living in a run-down apartment with my dad.

"Oh, you useless man!"

"I'll make 100 times that money and give it back to you!" retorted her father, probably untruthfully.

Somehow, I'm coping with my everyday life while having to support my dad, who loves gambling.

At school

"Sigh...I'll have to cut down on my lunch again..."

Suddenly someone interrupted Nanami's thoughts. "Hey Momozono!" Isobe, the school bully. Isobe picked up Nanami's plastic lunchbox, "Hey. Look at this everyone...! Her lunchbox only has rice and a pickled plum.

A snigger rose. She heard people saying, "That's horrible!" and "Wow, poverty much!".

Isobe turned to Nanami, "From now on, your nickname will be poverty!"

No matter how harsh and painful my life is right now, someday...someday, a day will come when I can smile every day.

At home

Nanami opened the door and entered her house. "Dad, I'm home. Have you bought new glass, dad? Dad?" Nanami scanned the house. Where was her dad?"

Then she saw it. A piece of paper, with flapping corners and letters that made up an unbelievable message.

That day suddenly came.

KNOCK! KNOCK! "Momozono-san, please open up!" Nanami got to her senses and opened the door. A man in a dark coat stepped in with a notice in his hand. "You have an order of enforcement that requires you to vacate this apartment at all costs."

Nanami stood there. "Where's your father?" the man asked.

The question repeated in her ear as she read the short letter her father left her.

I'm going on a journey. I'm sorry. Don't look for me.

Dad.

Outside Home

What?

Nanami watched as the men loaded the trucks with her belongings.

What? Just what's the meaning of this?

With her bags, Nanami sat down at the bus stop, her scarf blowing in her face. "...I..., "she started not knowing what to say or do, "I'm in deep trouble..."

She suddenly grew louder, "THAT DAMN OLD MAN!! Would a normal and upright adult run away from home, leaving his daughter behind with a bunch of debts and without any relatives?! Our house was confiscated. Where am I going to live from today on?!"
