I walk into the hall, waiting for some cobra mean girl to spit venom in my face. I'm ready to see cliques and have some jock guy sweep me off my feet. But no, when I enter the hall, people don't seem so separate. Nothing seems like the movies. I timidly walk to the office where I will get my schedule and meet the person I'm shadowing.
"Ah, Mallory Asher!" Says Principal Smith. I'm suddenly furious. You've got to be kidding me. I think to myself.
"It's Mallory Thorn," I say, trying to sound as polite as I possibly can. Only because I didn't want to have a bad relationship with the principal, especially not on the first day here. But just because Felicity Asher adopted me, doesn't mean I'm one of them. I look at the principal, then she at me. She fiddles with her glasses uncomfortably.
"I see," is all she says. I take a file from her, my schedule most likely. Principal Smith looks at her watch and sighs. I hear her mumbling about making the wrong choices...always late. "Well the person you'll be shadowing should be here any..." Before she can speak further, a girl barges in. This girl has clearly got spunk. She's African-American, a few inches taller than me, streaks of color in her hair, ripped jeans, basically a very flashy outfit. "...minute. Hello Tanya." The principal continues, looking at her in distaste.
"Hey Rachel!" Tanya replies. Principal Smith glares at her. Tanya doesn't correct herself. I glance from Tanya to the principal. They clearly don't get along. I clear my throat to remind them I'm still here. The principal turns back to me and smiles weakly.
"Well, you better get to your first class!" She says, basically pushing Tanya and I out of her sight. After the door closes, Tanya turns to me.
"Okay, the only reason why I'm doing this is because this is what I get instead of being suspended. They're trying to give me another chance "to prove myself". This is only until you become adjusted to this school, so don't think we're gonna be best friends, okay?" She pops her gum and picks at her finger nails. Yup, definitely has spunk. I thought about talking back, but there's really no point. I just let her take me to my first class, English.

"You're late." Our teacher says, his back still facing the board. When he turns, my eyes widen. He's tall, pale, blonde, a lot younger than I would expect a teacher to be. He's maybe in his late twenties. My heart skips a beat. Do I seriously like a teacher? I don't have crushes on people, this is really weird. And then again, I could see other girls in the class drooling over him too.
"I had to go to the office to pick her up, she's shadowing me," Tanya grumbles, hooking her thumb in my direction. I shyly wave.
"Pleasure," he replies, shaking my hand. A chill zips up my back. He gestures go two open seats and we both sit. "Now as I was saying, we are going to be talking about name meanings and how they fit you." I suddenly perk up at this. I love name meanings. It's like, my obsession or something. I can hear anyone's name and within seconds I can figure out it's meaning. For example, Tanya:
Likes to control everyone within their influence, to shape things to their own liking. From what I know, this seems close to accurate. The name however, was passed from the Russian name "Tatiana". The Shakespearian character and meaning being "fairy princess". I knew Tanya was no fairy princess.
