Before going home, he turned to the edge of the city. His mom would wait up for him. Standing against the glass, looking at himself, Kane felt like burning out his false eyes. Looking around, he made sure no one was near him and reached into his eye, taking out the contact concealing him.A bright green eye stared back at him. He took out the other contact, and saw the green eyes he shouldn't have. The green eyes that got his sister taken away. Born with fiery red hair and green eyes, his sister had been doomed a Wretched at birth, and sent away within the hour.
A noise made him turn around. Androids. He hurriedly put the contacts back in. "Have you taken the test today?" Kane mistakenly turned around, and immediately realized his contact was out of place. It was a standard android, a chrome piece of pure technology. It looked like someone had taken a sphere and stretched it out, leaving none of its technology reaching the surface. "Eye problem detected. Please provide blood." the metallic android voice said, an appendage coming out of its smooth body and latching around his arm. He felt the tiniest pinprick, and realized what had happened too late. The moment it released him, he ran for his life.
He was caught. You couldn't bribe an android. Where would he go? He had green eyes, he would be found. That was it. His sister would help him, and maybe, just maybe, they would get out.
He ran through the borders, he ran through the cities, never looking back. When the domes began shutting down the lights, he was in the middle of the Wretched City. It was filthy, the buildings half-collapsed shacks. An unsettling odour came from them, something that smelled like blood, sweat, and tears. The Wretched were the lowest of the low, weren't allowed to have children, nothing. It was a slow and painful death sentence, where you worked until you died. Kane thought about turning around, going to the Imperfect Dome, living his life and having a kid. It was different than the life he planned, with two kids because he was Absolute, but thought twice. He'd defied them for fourteen years. They would kill him.
A filthy man walked by him, probably coming back from a hard day managing the life support systems, double-taking when he saw Kane. "Do I know you?"
Kane shrugged. "I've never been here before. Why?"
The man snapped his fingers. "I got it! Do you have a sister? Red hair, seventeen or so? She has identical eyes to yours. She goes by Jade. She lives just down there." He pointed down the road, and Kane ran to the door before the man could ask what an Imperfect was doing in the Wretched City.
He knocked on the door, terrified. A figure shrouded in darkness opened it. "Are you uh, Jade? I need to..." He trailed off as the girl stepped into the light, her green eyes mimicking his. He prepared for the happy recognition. He was dragged by the collar into the house, and slammed into a wall. "What does a slimy Imperfect want with me?" she demanded angrily.
"Were you born to Absolutes?" he asked.
"Why do you care? My parents hated me and sent me away to die a Wretched."
He shook his head. "After you were taken, after Dad died, after I was born, our Mom hid me as an Absolute. Fake eye contacts and bribing Test Volunteers, all because she regretted losing you."
"Our?" she asked.
'Our." he smiled. "I'm your little brother."
She punched him and everything went black
